They all suck bro. I have a Automotive Smog inspection business and I inspect cars for dealerships all the time. I've seen so many of these vw's up to even 2009 with under 80k and transmissions are slipping and or not work at all.

PARTS and labor for these cars are EXPENSIVE. So when something goes bad, so does your wallet and possibly credit if you need to finance repairs lol. Seriously though.. Anything German will drain your pockets in repair costs and reliability. It's a specialized field and need special scan tools and tools just to work on it. You're local friendly mechanic you've delt with, if you have one, will probably no longer be able to help you.

    Heeeth my warnings!!!

P.S. When I say VW's. I mean Audi's as well. They use about the same units and drivetrains

Toyota uses a (Z) in the engine to desonate it being supercharged. (example 4A-GZE)

A month to rebuild an engine using the original block? Hope that shop is working on 10 other cars at the same time.

A month is a bit long time for a rebuild, especially on a easy engine to work on like the 1zz. I did my complete rebuild, including disassembly and reassembly for much less time and less money. I had mine done within a week while working a full time job. Make sure that they replace the oem head, main and rod bolts. They are all torque to yield and shouldn't be reused unless they have the proper measuring tools and check the bolts. Also, they need to follow the fsm carefully. Some places will slather on rtv sealant in areas where you need a gasket. Like the oil pump pick up and what not. Cus the excess can break off and float through the engine and clog up a oil supply for a bearing.

If you need the fsm, it can be had from newcelica.org in the tech department. There are two volumes. Grab both. The assembly of them is identical between the vvti and non.

A quicker way is to pour gasoline on them, ignite for a few seconds and quickly extinguish with a fire extinguisher.

    No issues so far!!

Basically how I see it, keep up with preventative maintenance, and you're set.
    Don't? you're fucked.

I've kept close eyes on threads on the e46 forums for people with transmission issues and engine issues and it's because they have NO preventative maintenance, they replace parts AFTER they go out, not when you should or start seeing wear on the part.

and preventative maintenance isn't expensive, the most expensive maintenance part I've bought was probably a $120 OEM radiator.

    I was referring to Vw's and Audi's.

BMW's will last a very very very looong time if you take care of them (Like you said). I get plenty with 200k+ on the original engine and tranny. The customers that come in that tell me they have changed either, have a shitty maintained car. Interiors and exteriors just abused.

audi's usually have the same drivetrains. If they're different.. then they're more complicated

Clutch problems are 99% driver dependent. lol The water pump isn't too bad. Gotta change the timing belt around that time anyway so you're already there.

Yeah, the entire manual transmission is a POC because it was an afterthought by Lexus after people demanded a manual after the first ISs were all automatic. The auto tranny is good for 400hp easy lol.
