I was thinking about swaping the tranny too, but then again it's my daily driver. . . I already got a 240 but then again I think driving auto is so boring. . . How much did it cost?

see above post

I like the manual, its much more responsive than the auto was ... as I said earlier I'm working out a few bugs and trying to figure out how I'm going to do things in the DIY (somehow having you put a fuse in the plug that goes to the auto tranny to bypass the clutch-start/park-nuetral saftey doesnt fly for me in the end) but all is well so far... *knocks on wood*

My only complaint so far (this is because of the daily driver comment) -

FUCKING TRAFFIC!

hehe I really need to re-learn how to use a clutch in traffic and such... I will say this though, I haven't ground a gear, burned the clutch or stalled yet so at least my skills of stick are still with me! Oh yeah, and discovering I had to put my drink down to shift was funny shit... lol

sweet deal on your conversion. i dont see the big problem driving stick in traffic. i mean its not like its tough as hell, it adds some excitement. plust you start to get your starts and downshifts from and into first gear down all good.

I was thinking of doing this swap when i had my 00 VE 3sp auto. But now, i have an XRS that comes with 6sp manual tranny, I am so happy with it now. I am very understand those who have auto transmission right now. Driving stick is much more fun and it is faster too.

It would be very interesting to see dyno charts and track times before and after the swap with all other mods the same.

too bad none are in existence on my car prior to the manual swap... I can guarantee though that the 0-60 time is better simply from the last couple days driving... in the morning on my way to work i'd often start off at this one location pulling into a road and hit 60 right as i came parallell to a certain light post - the last two times i've done it... i've been at 60 way before it... kinda nice... :D

I will however do my best to get all the minor bugs worked out of everything and do a test for you guys.

hehe - I'm afraid the video will be lacking - i hope to cut a couple clips and put it on the web, but as i said before - my camera person had to work all the hours we had people to work on the car - most of the time we were all focused on the project - as i said, it took us 18 hours - so you know not much time was spent dickin around lol...

however, the write-up diy will be VERY detailed. I have pictures from the clutch/master cylinder install and pictures from the shifter install as well as different wiring stuff for the wiring crap. The PDF will be 100% - i'll dig through footage this next week and see what is usable for video though.

im kinda interested in doing the swap too. The thing is (with my 98 corolla) my car has approx 118k miles. Im not sure if it would be worth it or not. The body is in excellent condition so Im sure I could probably keep the car at least another 150k miles or so. I know that 5 speeds are fun to drive b/c ive driven my moms 5 speed 91 camry and it kicks. Hey all I really need are the toyota part numbers would you be able to get them? Thanks.

I currently lack the slave cylinder and a flywheel (fidanza). I need as much info as possible! I'm in school to be master ase certified which pretty much means i get class credit to work on my car. I have not got a ecu. Will i need that or can hook it up to the auto one? Any help would be appreciated. OH, and those brass bushings.... where can i get them....?

I'm still working on the DIY for this thing... its a monster. Not really so much a reflection of the job, just making sure its in detail.

The parts list will be comprehensive and listed in the doc as well...

---

Brass bushings? what are you talking about? You will most DEFINITELY need the 5spd ECU.

list of parts i used: (diy spoiler)

Transmission bracket (bolts to left mount - all other mounts & brackets line up however you MAY want to purchase new mounts since you will have the whole thing out and I think the 5spd ones are a little stiffer.)

Clutch Pedal Assembly (springs, pins, nuts, etc)
Brake Pedal Assembly (springs, pins, nuts, etc)
Master Cylinder
Master Cylinder Hydraulic Line (metal with bracket to bolt to chassis)
Master Cylinder to Slave Cylinder Line (rubber)
Slave Cylinder Hydraulic Line (metal with brackets to bolt to transmission)
Slave Cylinder

M/T Corolla ECU (98-99)
5spd Transmission

Clutch Fork
Throwout Bearing
Pressure Plate (and related bolts)
Flywheel (and related bolts)

Shifter assembly
Shift and Selector Cables (2x)(run from shifter to transmission)
Manual (dual) cable firewall (bolts between the engine bay and inside on firewall side) grommet & cover plate
Manual (dual) cable internal (bolts down to the floor just before the firewall as a seal/guide) grommet and cover plate

Those were all the parts needed.

I know on 98-02 the *ONLY* difference in axles is betwen ABS and non-ABS setups. So you can use the axles from your auto on your manual - the specs are the *SAME*

read above... i only got a few tiny clips here and there because of lack of camera person. I was NOT going to wait on the availability of such person because the help I did have was hard to come by.

The DIY is about a week or so out from being completed. just finalizing it and making sure I word certain instructions right. (that and balancing a full time job with the shop is a bitch)

that sucks. So the only things under the hood that have to be replaced are the manually transmission/transaxle and manual transmission specific engine/tranny mounts?

Great job bud!

I just did this myself on a '98, of course, that's a 6-speed conversion and didn't include seperating the tranny from the engine at all since that 2ZZ thingy went in there too... At any rate, I hadn't looked at the wiring yet and that post was very helpful, now I don't have to figure it out myself!
