    Thermostat replacement

Recently, my car has been on the verge of overheating, so there's a good chance that my thermostat is bad. I hope it's not the water pump instead though. I haven't heard any squeaky pulleys, but I'll check the pulley for any play tomorrow. My question is which thermostats are interchangeable between model years? Will a 03-07 Corolla thermostat work on mine? Or are all Toyota thermostats the same? I'm looking to upgrade to a low temp thermostat.(TRD or aftermarket)

A low temp thermostat really isnt needed unless you do some seriously hard driving. You would be fine with an oem replacement.

Since you live in California, I think a low-temp thermostat would be a benefit to you

Yeah, it's gets really hot over here and I do hard driving from time to time, so I'll definitely upgrade to a low temp thermostat.

I already have an additive in mind. Purple Ice by Royal Purple. Nothing beats it. :)

btw, nobody answered my original question. Will the 03-07 low temp thermostat in that ebay auction work in my 98?

    Thanks. :)

I was reading up on low temp thermostats. Your car will take a much longer time to warm up and you might lose fuel efficiency. However, lowers operating temperature and increases power. Is this true?

Good god. I just spent over 600 in repairs already. I sure hope my water pump isn't bad too. :(

I just checked my water pump. It's fine. My thermostat is just old and sticking.

best thing to do is go to an auto parts store and have them compare part numbers for you or visually compare to see if diff years are compatible. i would do it all the time at work.

I did a thermostat change on mine. It did not fix my overheating problem. Although when I was replacing it I could see that the tip of the fan switch is corroded. I think my problem is that the fan switch activates the fans at a higher-than-usual temperature, thus my thermostat reading usually is at mid and sometimes above mid. I am changing my fan switch and coolant temp sensor and hope that fixes things.

    Goodluck!

I emailed the seller asking about the 9th gen thermostat compatibility on the 8th gens. He said they won't work. I think he doesn't know the product well enough or maybe he could be right...

In my email to him, I even specified that they both have the same 1ZZFE motor. Oh well. Most auto parts sellers don't know enough about the product they are selling... Sad.

Thanks for the double confirmation. :)

    LOL :D

I was so close to overheating at least 7 times today when I drove through the Valley to get to Glendale. Valley temperature was 108 around 7 PM. I had to have the heater on full blast with the windows down to cycle the coolant through the heating core to help with the cooling process. On my way home at 1:30 AM, the temperature was still 95 and my car threatened to overheat 3 times. However, it wasn't as bad and I didn't have to blast the heater. The car starts to overheat when the car is going up an incline. I'm not sure if that's significant or not. Once it levels off or goes down an incline, the temperature starts to fall again. However, it sometimes threatens to overheat on level streets too. I think perhaps we both need to add water to the radiator. I think the coolant is low perhaps? I'm also going to install my low temp thermostat when it arrives just to be on the safe side as well. It really seems like my thermostat is sticking and has a delayed opening and closing reaction time.

You have to drain the radiator and engine block before removing and installing the new thermostat. Then you need to refill the radiator and run the car with the radiator cap off until thermostat opens. The upper radiator hose will get hot. Turn off the engine and let it cool. Add coolant again until it's full. Squeeze the upper radiator hose to expel air, add coolant if needed, and replace the cap.

I realized my car overheated partially to one of the sub fans not working on my radiator. i hope thats it. I also need to flush out the coolant too so when i do that i'll probably change out my thermostat. damn it i think i need to buy a proper jack.

I have one if you need to borrow one. My low temp thermostat is on its way, so I'll be flushing the coolant pretty soon. The thermostat housing is pretty hard to get to though. We can flush both our cars the at the same time if you want. Make it a meet or something. LOL :D

I just added water to my radiator. It was low by about 1.5 liters. I hope that stops the overheating.
