Saturn to launch hybrids under Green Line badge

Saturn is going green.

The General Motors Corp. brand will launch a line of hybrid versions of its vehicles, to be called the Green Line series, Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak said at the annual Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City.

The first model will be the Vue Green Line small SUV to go on sale in mid-2006, she said. The Vue Green Line will save gas by automatically shutting off the engine during deceleration and stopping.

It will have what's known as a "mild" hybrid system, yielding roughly a 10% savings in fuel economy compared with a conventional gasoline engine. "Full" hybrid systems are technologically capable of saving even more fuel; the Ford Escape Hybrid uses a full-hybrid system.

Saturn currently sells high-performance variants of its vehicles called Red Line. The Green Line vehicles will give consumers improved fuel economy, and bolster Saturn's image as an environmentally friendly brand, Lajdziak said. She declined to discuss other Green Line variants.

shuts off during deceleration and braking? man that sucker better get that tranny very good so it won't break and hold up with the torque, and catch on lighting fast. they should jsut have a CVT tranny but with a chain no belt. belts have too much burning capabilities.
