I know it has been quite a while since we talked about this, but I wanted to let you know I took your advice and bought an Alpine 9835. All I have to say is "amazing". The whole stereo came to life. Everything sounded better. For the first time in 2 years I actually sat in my car with a smile on my face when listening to my stereo. An awesome recommendation! I will never buy a Pioneer again! Alpine has made a customer for life thanks to you!

I just decided to do a 5.1 system in my car after listening to the Caddy at Soundwaves here in MN, so I traded in the 9835 and bought an IVA-D300. I called Alpine and they said it had the same SQ as the 7996 but with a few less features and a screen. I mainly got the screen so that I can control the PXA-H701 or the MRA-D550 (if they ever release it) without buying the extra controller piece. I usually hate the way decks with monitors sound, but this one is incredible! At least as good as the 9835 if not a little bit better. Once I get the PXA-H701 or the MRA-D550 I will get all the features that the 9835 had and then some!

I also got fed up with the Boston's lack of mid bass so I did all Alpine Type X components, 6.5" in the rear and the three ways in the front. Again, "WOW"! Now that I have caught this Alpine bug, I need to know what you think of their amps and subs? Like I said, I was thinking about getting the 5 channel MRA-D550 (5 channels + built in DD/DTS processor) and I wanted to know what your thoughts were. Do you think it would sound better, worse, or at least as good as the Xtant amp I now have? Just wanted to know your thoughts before I dropped a grand on it. Also, since I like the sound of the Type X components so much, I was thinking about getting the Type X subs as well and maybe a few MRD-1001's to power them, but I really like the Boston subs for their SQ and their lack of boominess. I have also recently heard the new W6's and really liked those as well, but wanted your take on subs from a sound quality perspective.

Anywayz, thanks for all of your help, and let me know how your SQ comps have been going. Thanks!

You can't get the unit to play DVD's by itself, but you can add on an outboard DVD player. If you get one from Alpine, you can use the AI-net cable to connect the two or you can get any DVD player (PS2 or whatever) and use the imputs on your brain box to connect the two. If you have any further questions regarding this, just call Alpine at 800.421.2284 or 310.326.8000 in the US or 905.475.7280 if you live in Canada. I have called them before and they are very helpful. You can also visit http://www.alpine-usa.com/ for more details.

oh thanks man, I appreciate your very warm comments :D
It was a budget install because I just spent about $20 on MDF, another $20 on Fiberglass Mat/Cloth, and about $5 on resin. The labor was pretty intensive- the whole project took me about 6 months to finish..

The equipments aren't too cheap though :(

ya I know what you mean. MDF? is that a type of wood or carboard? Is that the stuff they use for walls on the inside of homes? sounds familiar.

well, "regular" fiberboard won't let air through as well :D The correct definition would be a a wood with finer particles than regular fiberboard. MDF has unique properties that regular plywood, pine, etc don't have. It doesn't bend under pressure, very dense, easily cut, very easy to shape and countersink, etc.

4' x 8' x .5" sheet on Home Depot costs $20 :D

I am waiting to do the stuff in my XRS, I got a Clarion DXZ645MP with Sirius box right now. The DXZ945MP I ordered finally came in and it goes in this weekend. The rest is unknown at this point. In my Sunfire I got a Alpine CDA7894 and ERAG320 sourcing my JBL BP180.2 running some Alpine 6.5" Co-axes, a Alpine MRVT407 running my Alpine 6x9s and a JBL BP300.1 running JBL GT1041D 10" in a ported box. I also have a kenwood plug and play sirius running through the ai-net aux input.
