how have they made history? shyguy's car has already got a 2zzge & 6 speed in it.... though it's not daily driven, it does drive

out of curiousity... why is it limited at only 7200? seems low....

I know the feeling of "yay it runs and we did a quick test drive.... now i'm tired and going to sleep... i'll enjoy it later".... the ae92 was that way after it's motorswap and the mr2 didn't even have the s/c hooked up, no exhaust, nothing on the intake, no coolant, no alternator, no o2 sensor, no gear oil... just ran it for a min or so & shut it off, but that was so much more glorious to me than the ae92's new motor starting the first time, lol

I don't really consider it "making history" but they may have been referring to the fact that this is the first time that the swap was done by someone in their home garage, as I've yet to expand to a full-blown fulltime shop. (Pete's car was done by a pretty large shop in Toronta IIRC).

As far as the limiter, if you checked out the thread you would have seen the explaination, but basically the computer limits the engine to 7000 rpm and will not activate lift if the car isn't moving. Since the donor car had abs and sends the speed signal through the anti-skid ECU, there was no way to get the speed signal to the computer. The problem has already been solved, the owner is just waiting on a part that needs to be wired and and he's good to go.

I know what you're saying on starting the engine the first time... I try to make sure it's breathing filtered air though! LOL

eh.... if you're just running it for a couple minutes (especially since the engine probably hasn't been started in months) a short period of no air filter won't be a problem.... at least with my swaps i generally put oil on top of the pistons to make sure the seals aren't completely dry on first crank overs, so "other" stuff will come out the exhaust anyways

the abs sensor.... wouldn't that just be on the axle ends of the 6 speed axles (near the hub end....) All abs setups i've looked at (well, generally i look at it on the axles, not actually in the car) they use a toothed gear that's on part of the CV joint and there is a hollifax sensor that just simply reads that those teeth are moving.... and if it stops moving (ie, hasn't read the next "tooth") then it would simply release the brake a bit..... maybe i'm just ranting though & you already know all this, lol

also...... because i've never seen an ABS gear on an axle to have "missing" teeth (which is a reference point for DIS systems that use a toothed gear and hollifax sensor) then you could potentially mount the hollifax sensor anywhere that would read the moving gear and make things easy.... hell, you could probably find an axle (or go to a parts store and just sit there and count how many there are) figure out the number of teeth and have a small gear machined, you could cut it in 1/2 (mount it closer to the transmission) and easily find somewhere to mount a hollifax sensor.....

So do you put like 1/2 a capful of oil down the spark plug hole or something like that?

Yes, the ABS reads the sensors from each wheel exactly as you described. In the Matrix, the signal goes from there to an "anti-skid" computer, which then sends the speed signal to the ECU. I can't use that since the car didn't come with ABS. (Even then, it would have been tricky).

The end solution will be to pickup a generic speeds sensor and set it up on a wheel or axle, just like you described, (I was thinking a great place would be the carrier bearing for the long halfshaft) and then run that signal through a calibrator and then to the speedo, and lastly to the computer.

In the meantime I have something simpler set up to make lift work. ;)

does the 2zz use a distributor??? i wonder if it uses a hollifax type sensor.... and if so then you could possibly cheat and also use the ignition signal as the abs sensor... it would always be turning...

yeah, i put just a little oil in each spark plug..... just dump a tiny bit down.... just makes it a bit smokey for a few seconds..... it's a good idea and some importers even reccomend you do it

Heheh you and I think alike. It doesn't use a diz, but I did try hooking it up to the tach signal :)

well... i'm guessing the setup is VERY similar to the edis systems that ford uses (which is the system i'm using in my mr2).... it has a tach signal that goes to the coilpacks (which since there are 2 it isn't like a normal tach signal.... neither would coil on plug setups) and a regular tach signal for the gauges, but that's not what you're looking for. I'm guessing toyota used a crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor... if so, i'm guessing it's something similar to a toothed wheel with a magenetic hollifax sensor (easiest way.... much like any other distributor) which is the signal that goes to the ignitor/ignition module (or whatever you want to call it).... that signal is not the same as a tach/negative coil signal however....

Actually they use both a crank sensor and a cam sensor similar to the Ford SHO ignition in fact, but with coil-on-plug ignition. It's a pretty nice system. I'm curious now though if hooking it up to the cam sensor would actually work...
