Engine I would like to raise my redline

    Corlla/Matrix 1ZZ-FE redlines @ 6450rpms and Celica/MRS redlines @ 6800rpms. Are we saying that revving a Corolla 1ZZ-FE with the exact same internal parts as a Celica 1ZZ-FE to the same 6800rpm redline is going to blow something up? Supercharger piggyback increases redline to 6800 rpms. Raising the redline isn't going to blow anything up unless is something outrageous like 7000+. You can pretty well go about 1000rpm above the peak hp without really risking damage. Not good, but not as bad as everyone is thinking.

    I drive 80mph all the time....actually quite a bit faster sometimes. I've never blown anything up or even risked blowing anything up for that matter.

    I rev just shy of the rev limiter all the time. With good maintenance, it's no big deal. 6450rpm isn't THAT high. I feel like there's power to be had in rpms above 6500. Who knows b/c who's tried it. And the rev limiter won't let you find out, either.

    Allright, guys, now we're getting somewhere. Deadnick, you're right: one of the problems I have in 1st and 2nd gear is hitting the fuel cutoff. In fact I even hit the cutoff in 3rd, when I kick it down from 5th to 3rd on the highway to pass. All you other guys are saying, "Why raise the redline, the engine quits making power way before that?" If that's true, how come I really have to keep a close eye on my tach? Keep in mind, peak power's at 6000, and redline is 450 rpm later. If the power really started dropping dramatically right after it peaked, I'd never have to look at my tach in the first two gears. I'd be able to tell when to shift just by the seat of my pants. Then, when you start freeing up the breathing with intakes and exhausts and head jobs, you only shift the powerband up anyways, so bouncing off the fuel cutoff is only going to become more of a problem. Am I the only one (besides Deadnick) who really ever revs his car?

    Lekz, you touched on something I was thinking about, which is that although we might not know of anybody making cams for the 1ZZ, there is the possibility of getting a regrind. Guys, don't just relegate yourselves to only catalogue-listed, bolt-on parts. I researched locally about getting my stock flywheel lightened, and I found a shop that does such regularly. Price: $140. Quite an option compared to the $400 and up Fidanzas, Unorthodox Racings, and MWRs. Getting cams welded and reground is not uncommon.

    Yes, redline is there for a reason, and I can tell you from my 12 years of motorcycle experience that redline is the recommendation and not the limit. If it were the limit for safe engine operation, then manufacturers would put the limiter right at redline, or possibly even a little before. As it is even with the Corolla, the limiter isn't even right at redline. It's a little beyond, too. And believe it or not, your tach needle does have lag. If you're doing full-throttle accelerations in the lower gears, your needle is lagging ever so slightly. The only kind of tach that might not have any lag at all would be an electronic bar graph tach, or a tach of that nature. So, if you think about it, if the limiter kicks in even beyond the redline, and the needle is lagging behind the engine, the engine's possibly revving as high as 6550 or thereabout. So much for your engine disintegrating when you get to 6451 rpm. You might say, "What's the big deal about an extra 100 rpm?" but then again, you probably have an automatic. By the way, I'm very familiar with what valve float feels like, and have experienced it several times.

    you hit the limiter because you are no good at driving your car yet..... if you go from 5th to third to have to pass ON THE FREEWAY and drop into your rev limter this proves that you are no good yet. the power band is shifted through modified induction such as aftermarket cams and or headwork and forced induction. you will only gain peak power with an intake and exhaust, while losing low end..... all within the factory rev range. and no you arent the only one who revs there car..... mine sees 7800 daily..... and i shift at 7800 without bouncing off the limiter, which is convienently set at 7800

    so spend some time learning how to properly drive your vehicle and not manhandle and destroy it and then come back with a little intelligence, maybe we will play nice then

    I agree. I think some of the people in this Forum play themselves off as guru's and try to talk it tuff like they know whats going on but in reality they dont know anymore about it then the rest of us. Thats why I like people like you that aren't haters :)

    AMEN BROTHER! Hahaha. I don't want to change my car to make it safer, I dont want to change my car to make it more reliable. I want to change my car to make it fun so all of this other warning crap is pointless to me :) Give me a light fly wheel a new clutch and a 6000 shot NoS. Just kidding ofcourse but come on. Too bad we can't just increase our red line with a chip like so many other cars. My friend just chipped his BMW 3 series and increased the shit out of his redline and it gave him 35 more HP.

    AWESOME! I think the same thing. I came here thinking this was a good forum to talk about crazy new stuff to do to the corolla. If I wanted advice on how to remain OEM I would call the dealership <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" /> Besides everyone is talking like Corollas can't handle any of these mods yet I have friends with stand alone engine management systems on their honda civics with all kinds of crazy stuff running just fine. I can't honestly beleive that Honda engines are indestructable <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" />

    This forum is one of the must unhelpful forums I've ever been on, after thousands of posts on many forums. I rarely even post here because of it. The sad thing is, most of the people on here are pretty decent, but people like turbo4age and slvr2000fdvspec ruin it for everyone else. I hope that in the future the moderators here start getting a tighter rein on all the flaming here, after all the mods do set the tone for the whole forum.

    wow, you obviously don't know much about the toyota electronics, do you??? all you need is an under $10 set of crystals from radio shack..... not going to say how to do it, but it can be done VERY cheap..... been proven in my ae92... 6250 was the old redline.... the ecu's fuel cut is now at 7800 (i did it for a reason, though)

    SUre are a bunch of assholes here...

    If you up the rev limiter you can get a piggyback and change your powerband... port & polish which would love a higher rev limiter turbo supercharge etc etc etc

    if its bolt ons the shifting at a higher rpm range may land you in the sweet swot rpm range so youll get max power after the shifts...

    there are many reasons to do it, dont call him an idiot for trying it. I wanted to do this for a while and will probably be doing it soon.... but I need my new fuel pump before I get to it....

    Ill post some stuff up later how to do it when I find where I saved it LoL

    anyway you could try using the MR spider ecu harness....the red line on the mr-S is 7200 rpms safely and it dosnt have a different "Cam setup" or "stronger valves." im not to familiar with the mr-s ecu set up or why it has a higher redline, fuel curve? idk. all i can say is that its redline is higher than ours and it is the same exact engine as ours. and if you dont belive me you can install the same exact components that fit our car on to the mr-s

    mr-s= 1zzfe everyone already knows that

    your engine will not blow if you raise the redline to about 7200, infact i would be surprized if there would be any engine wear at all. lets stop thinking fast and furious guys, it takes a shitload to blow an engine.

    now then that should help you and your question about raising the redline....

    but what you really want is something that will produce lower end power...more torque...until you can do that i wouldnt worry to much about the top end power, cause you would need this to carry you into the higher rpms

    i didnt read any bullshit posts, but wouldnt it be worth it just so you could accelerate for longer in the juicy lower gears?

    it's possible, i'm working on a project that will raise redline to 7000 RPM and adjust the fuel map to one that will deliver more power at the expense of fuel economy.

    and for you jokers out there who think that this engine can't handle a higher redline, it's exactly the fucking same block and cylinder head (which is where i'm assuming people state problems will occur) as the celica GT which has a 7000 RRM redline. i dont think that toyota would really sell a pseudo sports car (or any car for that matter) unless the engine is rigorously tested through the entire range of engine speed.

    who said they were going to raise their redline above 8000 rpms? and 1000 extra revolutions is a hell of a difference, especially if you have FI. tampacorolla it is quite obvious that you know absolutly NOTHING about cars. you can safely....SAFELY raise your redline up to 7200 rpms, without having any engine wear at all....do you even know how long it takes to &quot;blow a motor&quot; a lot longer then you would ever think. i have a friend who pushes his cl 2.2 to 7800rpms on a 6200rpm redline. not sugesting you should do this, but his car has 80k miles on and he pushes his car like this constantly no damage yet, altho i wouldnt be surprized that it will break some time soon

    Does anyone know the fuel pump and injector specs for the MR-2 and Celica GT versus the Corolla? The 1ZZ-FE would probably still be very reliable with a 7000~7200rpm, but, the fuel map is all wrong for that kind of a redline, so you would need to get some sort of fuel management setup to modify your fuel map. With that, you should be safe, but before someone goes and does that to their car, make sure you research the 1ZZ-FE in it's different applications thoroughly to make sure there aren't any other modifications or different parts used in in the MR-2/Celica GT applications (when compared to the Corolla).

    ok come down guys let me clear this, you can raise your Engine Power by change the main computer and have to be retune by dyno and reprogram. why spent so much money to add extract 800rpm.. Max for 1zz-FE reline in Japan Spec is 7200 to 7800max. 2zzGe is 9200rpm to 10000rpm max. do more research guy don't end up with blow engine :p

    if you raise your redline AND have anything else done you may be able to raise it... let alone when you shift (look at a dyno) say you drop 2K rpms... if you shift at 7K vs 6K you will end up in different powerbands which can make you faster in the 1/4

    If you have a port & polish itll prob raise top end... cams would definately (unfortunately vvti and cams dont mix)

    turbo or supercharger would enjoy gains... There are reasons to raise the rpm limiter stop putting people down since you have no idea where they are taking there car!

    However if you have an intake and exhaust only.... the gains will be minimal maybe .1 or .2 maybe more seconds off a 1/4 since you can shift and stay in a higher powerband... but really wont give you more power... so unless your doing something big later stock rpm range is fine.... also if you over rev it you can severely mess up your engine.. bent valves etc etc
