Hood Liner...needed?

    Hey dudes,

    My hood liner/insulator is oil soaked. It's not coming from the car. I spoke to the previous owner (my brother) and he assures me it's not coming from the car but was an accident of some sort. Anyway, I've had the car for months and it's not evaporating or anything. I squeeze the hood liner and the oil oozes out. I want to clean my engine bay but the liner is priority number one.

    It's so soaked that it's sagging and easy to rip with my hands. I honestly don't even know if cleaning is possible or even worth it. So my question is, can I remove it? The general consensus that I've read online is that its for sound insulation and that, contrary to popular belief, it isn't to help with the heat ruining the paint on the hood. Case in point being that aftermarket hoods don't come with hood insulators. In fact, I've read that it keeps heat from escaping which isn't good for under-hood temperatures. I can always dynamat under the hood if the sound is too much.

    I probably answered my own question but I wanted some opinions from Corolla owners; any of you guys running without the hood liner?

    In lots of cars the hood liner is held on with plastic clips, and when there is an engine fire, the clips melt and the liner helps to douse the engine fire.

    If your liner is soaked in oil, I would definitely recommend removing it, because it would literally be adding grease to the fire.

    Is your PCV system operational? (No breathers or anything, right)?

    I've read it acts as a fire blanket but you're right if it oil soaked it'll defeat the purpose. My PCV is system operational.

    Remove that one as soon as possible. Installing a replacement isn't necessary, your decision. My truck doesn't have one, nor does my carbon fiber hood on the car.

    The oil IS coming from your engine. It's from excessive oil burning and engine blow by gasses.

    I am running without the liner right now and it's louder.

    No. It's excessive blow by coming out of the PCV system. Remember my intake manifold cbass? How full of oil it was? My hood liner was equally full of oil because of the blowby.

    hmmm, my body kit rolla had that cover thing till 230k and it was not oozed in oil....but i took it off because it started to sag....but yea i remember

    My engine is reall loud with the liner-less hood that also has a vent, combined with my intake being out at the bottom corner with no fender liner blocking it.

    Ah I see. Resolving the oil consumption (drilling extra piston holes or buying upgraded pistons) should in turn resolve this then? I keep putting it off but the consumption is slowly getting worse.

    Make sure they are 3 hands deep.

    However, even if you are burning mad oil, there has to be something else wrong with your engine for it to actually leave the engine.

    Hence my PCV question in POST #2; called it. :fyeah: J/K.

    Find out what the "accident of some sort" was. Did he do an oil change but forget to put the oil cap on? You say it's not coming from the motor now, so remove the liner, clean the underside of the hood and drive around. That'll tell you if it's still happening.

    None of my cars had the liner either my mazdaspeed had air ducts on with no liner , my darts look more like dynamat . My corolla one had been soaked with oil from not putting the oil cap fully which basically sprayed a good quart up there .smh .

    People do drill the holes into the pistons. However, You can either buy new ones or just clean the existing ones. I wouldn't recommend drilling them. I'm sure it works though.
