Restore and upgrade

    Doing some mods, need some advice,

    Aim: meet and beat the oe standard on the old rolla

    First part of the project is brakes. So need advice on how to proceed

    Currently running on:

    Original booster, lines, and fluid.

    Brembo blanks and akebono up front
    Oe Toyota drums and pads out back.

    What's a good upgrade for better braking ability and confidence?

    Targets to meets when I say ability and confidence:
    1) reduced braking distance
    2) reduce fade
    3) reduced Brake pedal travel

    I'd say that stainless steel brake lines should be your first mod, though I've never done them before

    Same brake mods as you except Hawk Performance Ceramic pads.

    Just changing from stock fluid to Motul RBF660 let me run hard with full braking on the track for 25-30 minutes with no fading. Lines, rotors, pads held up much longer than the tires!

    For the flush, can I use regular parts chain fluid, and then switch over to say Amsoil 500? Or is the rule, use the same fluid for flush and fill?

    For pads (majority city use stop and go traffic with occasional highway use)
    Isn't hawk performance ceramic OE replacement?
    Any experiences on
    HPS
    Yellow stuff
    Red stuff
    Porterfield r4s

    Rotors:
    Brembo is my solid choice,
    Any opinions on power slot or ebcs

    why not rear disk conversion using the rear disk part from ae92, ae111 or celica ?

    or if u dont feel like to convert drum to disk, just change the booster from original to 92-96 camry 2.2/3.0 , note if your car is a 98-00 model and come with ABS, you must change the abs module to a 01-02 one to keep ABS .

    changing the booster will should get more brake power, but in my opinion, rear disk brake is quite enough already ( even though i might change my booster too eventually)

    Don't have a decent workshop willing to drill the Celia hubs for the rolla. I'm trying to maximize the setup as is. The booster and conversion is way more then I would need.

    AE92 GTS is 4 lug pattern....... just giving you some idea....

    i guess improved brake pads and rotor will somehow increase the performance, than if you dont feel enough, u can always get the booster or rear disk conversion

    that is probably the most cheapest way to do a rear disc conversion as i've already done it that way twice..

    i bought everything needed to do the swap for around $60 from a local junk yard.....then the rotors Milky on the forums sent me a set of disc already drilled 4x100 for some corolla parts in exchange.

    I have Haw HPS pads on my car with drilled KVR rotors, OEM everything else all around. At the time of the upgrade it was amazing but right now my shoes out back are shot so my brakes aren't the best currently.

    So I have been researching lol a lot about brakes:
    Blanks great heat sink city driving will cause warping

    Slotted great water dispersion, but prone to cracking and decreased pad contact

    Drilled, heat dispersion but prone to cracking and decrease contact

    So far I have price out:

    Brembo blanks, or centric premium (hat is painted:( 38+ tax each
    Stop tech slotted $58 each no tax
    3gd ebc rotors $63 each no tax

    SOOOOO CONFUSING.

    EBC Yellowstuff crumbles but also offers superior stopping power

    Hawk hps the golden combo, but poor cold bite

    Porter field r4s tad bit better than the hawk better cold bite

    Yellow stuff: $95
    Hawk :76 shipped

    city driving will not warp rotors, I've never heard that one lol. Mountain driving can though, but if you need to, you can always engine brake.

    Apparently, (this is assuming your brake caliper is in full working condition, lateral runout and hub runout is at the prescribed factory measurements), if your in constant city stop and go traffic, blank rotors heat up quickly (efficient heat sink), and if one doesn't keep off the brakes while in stuck in traffic pad material transfers to the rotor creating high spots aka warping.

    The solution is
    A) when stuck in traffic layoff the brakes or allow some rotation forward to help minimize rotor pad contact
    B) drilled rotors to allow better airflow (at what cost is what worries me)

    I don't want drilled rotors, as the winter months will surely do a number on them, slotted vs blank vs dimpled & slotted is what I'm down to.

    ^This. Also, even if it's a blank it should be vented, which will take care of most of the heat issues anyway.

    well, ordered it:

    Brembo Blanks and EBC Yellowstuff....

    Hopefully the EBCs aren`t too hard on the Brembos.

    BTW if anyones interested 3GD rotors from ebc arent that much more compared to Brembos

    For city driving, regular rotors are fine (no slots, no drills).
    I'm in a garage daily, fixing cars driven daily... Yes, rotors do get warped from daily use (over time; particularly in areas with 4 seasons throughout the year).

    Actually, I changed my front rotors and pads last night (and painted the calipers black). I'm using higher grade rotors w/ a coating to have the disc stay silver & shiny for longer. The pads are ceramic and good quality. I'm at a loss for brand names at the moment.

    For daily use without harsh driving, you don't need to spend a fortune on the brakes.
