Increase MPG?

I bought a '98 corolla recently and I was told they could hit some high MPGs.

I tried calculating my rolla's MPG, if I did my math correctly, it only gets 16.7 MPG city.
It's winter time right now where I live, so i have the heater on.
But 17 is pretty low still. Kind of disappointed on that part.

Is there anything I can do it to increase MPG?
I've read the articles on ecomodder on hypermilling.
A few things caught my eye, but i was wondering if anybody had anything specific for a corolla.

So when you calculated it, you took the miles driven from your last fill up and divided it by the number of gallons it took you to fill the tank, right? Well if your math is right, the best thing to do is perform regularly scheduled maintenance. Pretty much everything else is a gimmick or not practical (spend too much and you won't save much). How many miles do you have. Try changing your air filter, spark plugs, wires, pcv valve, etc. Do you have CEL? or anything else that might lead to an answer?

this is kind of obvious but also the way you drive. if you have a manual, you can increase your mpg pretty easy by just driving smarter and less aggressively. but definitely what nyrican said, regular maintenance is key. Dont forget to check your tire pressure.

I bought this to help me keep an eye on my MPG's


I have an automatic with badly worn front tires and some messed up alightment(gonna get both fixed as soon as I get an extra $300) and I get around 30mpgs give or take mixed.
Along with the above mentions, make sure your tires are in good shape, and your alighment it within spec.
I make up all of the high mpg's on the highway, i found that going 75-80 mph at about 2.5 grand,where I drive that's in a 55-60mph zone where most people drive between 60-85. The trick is to find the lowest rpm at which the mph needle still very slowly climbs. That's when you get your peak mpg's in terms of just using the throttle.

I also got about the same in my rolla in the beginning...

now I'm rolling 24mpgs... but...

featherwieght konig, proxes 4 tires @ 42psi
deleted catalyst
weaponR secret intake
seafoamed the engine
NGK oem spark plugs - no fancy shit here
a good wheel alignment never hurts
took all the shit I could out of the car- (still got audio system and a jack in the back)
high pressure radiator cap
re-grounded the whole engine with additional points and fatter wires
the de-gunked the transmission with the appropriate seafoam product
new seals for the valve guides...

and I think that's pretty much it...
except the feather weights and the regrounding I think it all falls down in maintainance

most important of all... don't gun the poor 1zz at those green lights, and don't over rev it (much )

I seafoamed my car 3 times cause the last owner was an old bag, but I don't recommend you do them back to back, wait atleast 2 months in between... (O2 must burn all that shit that the engine spews when you do them)

i'll definitely look up on how to keep maintenance on those things.

I drive how it recommends you do on ecomodder, just coast and all that.
Probably because most of the time i've been driving, i've been carpooling with 3 additional people in my car.

I bought mines from ebay. It was about $80 and I think it was worth it. All sorts of features. There are other ones that are more expensive and have more features.

I don't think it will give you horsepower, but it will give you info like engine and transmission temp, oil pressure, etc.

The most important factor for gas mileage is also the most obvious. Maintenance! Stay on top of your tune ups, spark plugs, oil changes, transmission oil changes, and keep your tires inflated to the correct psi. Other factors will include weight as mentioned above. Lighter wheels will help some. They will help in reducing fuel use in accelerating slightly, but due to the lighter weight, they will require more fuel to maintain speed since they won't have as much momentum to drive them. For city traffic, lighter wheels are your friend. For highway not so much, but you do have better steering response and handling.

i read an article in car and driver i think... maybe car craft... i dont know but it said there are new michelin tires that are supposed to reduce drag and boost fuel economy. i think there were 4 brands that are making such tires. dont remember which ones though. its worth checkin out. i read the article in the bathroom at work so ill try and find it again tomorrow.

The Michelin tires that give you good fuel economy are in the commercial with the giant evil gas pump that sucks the money out of the people.

I completely forgot about different speed tires. You're definitely not going to want sticky V or higher speed ratings. H's are a good compromise of grip and mileage. Or if you want hardcore mileage, go with T's.

That's what I meant. I don't think it gives a HP reading. I think it does give you a 0-60.
