    Side airbag conversion in a nutshell

    So I was researching the side airbag conversion to see what was needed and how involved it was. Here are my findings.

    The side airbags are wired below the seat to the airbag assembly mounted inside the seats as you can see here.

    Here is a view from the front of the side airbag.

    For someone to do a conversion, they would have to get these airbag sensors on both sides of the car located here to detect a side impact:

    And then wire these sensors into the airbag ECU by the gas pedal to the side airbags. That's not so complicated, but you also need welding skills to weld in a new mount on your seats.

    This is a standard front car seat without side airbags. Notice that there is no side airbag mount.

    If you can do all of these things then you have side airbags.

    the airbag ECU is also physically different. The regular one only has plugs for the steering wheel and dash bags.

    it's a much easier project (and less dangerous/costly) to add abs to your car.

    ah..didn't know that about the ECU. Yeah, you're right. I said screw it. But in case someone wanted to try it... :cool:

    But the ABS cost more in parts because you need different CV axles in the front and rear hub bearings

    There's no point anyways considering the age of those side airbags. Are you sure they're up to code and will deploy in an accident? I don't really trust airbags close to 10 years old.

    I think you're supposed to get new ones every ten years, or at least get them serviced. (which most likely includes replacement)
