I am wanting to do a trans swap in my 2000 corolla this summer. Auto to manual. On the old vvti.net there was a person who did it and had a whole list of everything needed. If anyone knows what all I need or has a copy of that post I would greatly appreciate it. Peace.

Why?? Doing that will cost you lots of dough. Even though it is done correctly, the value of the car will decrease (because AT is more expensive than MT). If you want MT, I suggest you just buy a MT rolla.

I just converted a '98 to six speed using the Matrix XRS parts.

However, it would be easier to do by getting all the parts from the manual car of the same year.

You need:

Shifter assembly
Shifter cables
Brake pedal
Clutch pedal assembly
Clutch master cylinder and lines
Manual tranny
Clutch

That should be about it. Just check and see if you need a TOB (throwout bearing), I'm not sure on that. Also, the transmisison mount might be slightly different, but you can probably modify your stock one if that's the case.

Also, there's a minor change you need to make with the wiring, basically there's two wires that you either need to run to your clutch start switch on the clutch pedal assembly, or just wire them together so the car can start even in gear. These wires normally go to either the (automatic) gear selector or the auto tranny computer. I'll help you out with that as soon as you get all the mechanicals done.

Or, if you're near Vermont you can just bring it to me and I'll do it for you.

what about ecu I know I am gonna need a manual ecu but am I gonna need the wiring harness as well?

I'm not sure what you mean... if anything it will be much more reliable with the kind of power that Mantis is going to be putting down. Let's just say that he better get a Quaife installed first!!!

You won't need the wiring harness unless the plugs are different (not likely), but I'm not even sure that you'll need the ECU. I've seen it done before where they kept the stock automatic ECU. There's a DIY on www.corolla-racing.com , it's a sticky, go check it out.

(It's for an AE92 but it will be similar...)

An 8th gen with XRS rims. Us XRSers not unique no more.

The way I did it was, I took the Matrix hub and had it pressed out of the bearing, and then had it machined down about 2mm, and a small spacer made so it looks just like the 4-lug hub, pressed that into the Corolla bearing, and then the splines are different, so you have to use at least the outer cv joint from the Matrix, which also needs to be machined so that it doesn't contact the outside of the hub bearing.

The brake caliper bolts right on.

You could do the whole thing much easier by just taking the hub out and knocking out the lug studs, and then having it drilled with the pattern you want. We did it this way because we're using modified Matrix axles. With the swap.

We're also doing a rear disk conversion on the car, I think we'll be using Celica parts for that.

ooo ooo for those people that have auto's this is for you! there is a manual conversion out by levelten. They have that teptronic shifter or whatever its called. 400-500 bux. For people that want a little fun once in a while

Don't forget clutch/flywheel bolts if you are not swapping off a parts car.

I would like to see some pics of how the clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder mount in an 01-02... Anyone? Travis you meantioned pre-existing mounting hardware on the firewall for the clutch pedal, but it appears toyota deleted them for M-Y 01'. I'm looking at having to move the brake booster out of the way for drilling if thats the case (guess thats not really a big deal).

I hope to have my swap done in 2-3 months. I'm just collecting parts until then including a TRD shifter .

It will fit, but the mount might be a little different, and most important: the gear selector will be on the wrong side of the tranny, but you will probably be able to get one from a Corolla and swap them.

the drilling/cutting is a bitch unless you can get the ventilation piping to the left vent out as well as the fusebox...

Vortex you have those D.I.Y.'s for swapping? I have most of everything just missing flywheel, clutch kit and master cylinder. I want to get starting on setting up the pedals at least. thanks man!
