Folks, My check engine light came on. I went to AutoZone and they did a check and found 5 possible causes. Low fuel Pressure, Faulty MAF/VAF senson, Cylinder misfire condition, Faulty HO2/AF sensor or Large Vacuum Leak. I then went to local Toyota dealer and they wanted $98 plus 6% tax to hook car up to diagnostic tool. Being recently unemployed I could not afford this scalping. Any ideas, suggestions, recomendations or insights would be greatly appreciated. I have an 06 Carolla. Please PM me with ideas I am not overly familiar with how to navigate this forum. thanks

What are the actual codes that are popping up?

Sounds like a P0420 or something similar. Do you have an aftermarket intake at all? It sounds like your MAF sensor needs to be cleaned and computer reset. Autozone should sell this stuff. CRC QD electronic parts cleaner. I hit my MAF sensor with this, let it dry and it usually fixes the problem.

The code was PO171. Yup I cleaned the MAF and I used the very same stuff, electonic cleaner. Now I will just disconnect the batery for about 1/2 hour and see what happens. I do not have any mods on the car, air intake etc.
    thanks so far.

Well on my corolla 01 i would always get that same code p0171 system too lean on bank 1...i tried that cleaner stuff, then i sprayed some of that inside my throttle body and cleaned it with a toothbrush (came out very dirty) replaced the original air filter to a K&N drop in and i would still get it after around 300 miles or so, then i changed my donut ring and my exhaust manifold gasket and it cleared the problem, have not got the light back on and its been 1k miles

It seems to have worked for now. I cleaned the MAF and then removed battery cable for about 10 minutes. Rode around this afternoon, no engine light. cBass, what is a donut ring? In case I need to change mine.

The "donut ring" is the little seal gasket used to prevent air from being sucked in through the sensor, which will definitely mess everything up.

wait, i thought the donut ring was the one that is in between the exhaust manifold and the down pipe to prevent exhaust leak which causes the CEL, loss of power and a sluggish farting noise from the engine bay....there is another gasket that is for the 02 sensor which also needs replacing after 100k because what gold said will happen, will mess with the computer...i replaced both o2 sensor gaskets, the exhaust manifold gasket, another gasket that sits before the cat (literally turned to dust after i took it out) and the one in between the downpipe and exhaust manifold...

replacing all 5 took me at least a day.

oh, well donut ring = gasket. They are everywhere air is forced, so yeah intake and exhaust. I just thought he was talking about the MAF sensor.

sorry, I'm about to install a $600 intake on my car and I've been doing a lot of research on it (so I don't screw it up) so I've got MAF sensors and donut rings on the brain...

Feel any noticable gain? pics? I think my next mod will be an intake like yours with a heat shield.

I haven't driven it enough yet, just around the block. I reset the ECU, so it should relearn the new settings soon. I'll wash the engine someday and post a pic.

I was gonna say why arent you posting this into your "luxury toyota" thread?
From what I heard it takes a full gas tank for the the ECU to actually re-adjust the air fuel ratio to get any real performancer gains... on new cars anyways, not your 99 corollas. But feel free to correct me if im wrong.

Because my thread is full of crap.

That sounds right with the ECU. It has already added a new sound, but time will tell how it ends up. The exhaust/muffler seemed to help.

Then don't say oops when you realized it was the wrong thread, when you later say you posted here because yours is full of crap. Which is it lol
