    5 point racing harness review.

Everyone who drives hard at the track needs one of these. The seat belt locking device I've seen that clips onto your seat belt doesn't even come close. I think DOT. has one. My friend had an old RJS racing harness which he just gave to me and we installed it this afternoon right over the existing piece of crap factory 3 point seatbelt. It holds you in really well. Taking hard turns hardly makes you move in your seat. I can react faster and more easily. However, I'll only using this for when I'm at the track or doing a canyon run. For normal driving, I'll still be using the stock seat belts. Pics will be up tomorrow since it's too dark outside.

Some racing harnesses are legal on the street provided they're not expired. They have to be replaced every once in a while to a new set with new standards. Either way, they're much safer than the standard belts. :D

LOL I got this harness for free. :) It helps you make turns more efficiently without your body moving around.

I had the flip the head rest around since it straps me into the seat and the old position of the head rest had my head at a downward angle. LOL :D

This is more a heavy duty harness. It's a 3 inch wide 5 point.

For cheaper deals, go here. However, they're for more mild use. Most likely 2 inch wide and only 4 point. You never use the 5th belt anyways. And take your pick. There are a lot of choices.

Yeah, You don't have to shift your weight and lean into the corners leaving you with more time to concentrate on the wheel alone. For example, try taking hard turns without a seat belt on. Not recommended and purely theoretical. It's hard to steer since you're struggling to keep your ass in the seat. The harness improves upon this concept. This leaves you with full control of the wheel at all times.

You just have to position the seat so that your wrists can rest on top of the steering wheel comfortably at a full arms length. Remember that when you install it, they must be mounted at the seat belt existing mounts. Those are the only points that are reinforced enough to hold you in. Otherwise, you'll rip the mounts right out and strip the hell out of the point, not to mention losing your restraining device. I installed this harness right over the existing belt system so that I can still use the normal belts for daily driving. That way cops can't write you up. Just say it's for the occasional track run.

Looking good but I would have those shoulder straps mounted up on the rear deck lid. Where they are mounted now if you roll you might crush your spine.

Actually no.. Only DOT approved belts are street legal and does not expire. Racing harnesses carries either a SFI and/or FIA which carries a expiration date plus extremely strict rules about mounting and are not street legal. Only one company makes a street legal 3 and 4pt harness and it is Schroth (who also manufactures for Sparco). I had those but never used them on the streets because they're simply not too comfortable.

The mounting method he is using is just fine and is a approved method by Sparco, Schroth, and Takata.

Offtopic. Are your side airbags inside the cushion or something? Because I don't see them or how they could inflate without ripping out your chair fabric.

Yeah, they're inside the seats. Once they blow, I need new seats. :(

Yes, unfortunately it's an autotragic. I had no choice in the matter since I got the car used. I might do a manual swap later in the far future.

I don't understand why they would expire. They're not cheap to replace either.

The webbing get loose over time. When they expire you'd either have to get the re-webbed or toss them because no sanctioning body would allow you to pass inspection (not an issue unless you actually race). That's one of the reason why most race teams opt for cheaper brands like teamtech or impact racing.

I see. I notice that after driving with them for a while, they get a little looser. So the ones that don't expire are made to not get loose over time?

no, the manufacturer just dont bother to get FIA or SFI approval and are not legal to use under any circumstances except car show (or autoX since they dont care). Think NRG, or the fake TRD ones on ebay. If anyone get those and die in a crash they deserve a darwin award.

I think I'll wear my normal 3 point belt under the harness too. LOL :D Just in case it fails. The harness still holds me in pretty nicely though.

Just took the car for a canyon run and the racing harness did it's magic. I didn't have to worry about sliding around in my seat. I could initiate turns faster and concentrate on the road. I'm so glad I have these. :D
