    wierd, wierd problem

i'm hoping someone else has experienced this so i'm not going insane.

last night, it rained. and rained. and poured. i was driving back from the movies, when i noticed my engine sounding "funny". i stopped under an overpass for a few minutes, to see if that had any effect. i restarted the car, and it sounded like it was back to normal, so i drove on...only to have the same problem happen AGAIN.

essentially, my intake is sucking in small amounts of water when it rains...last night was the worst it's ever been. it's the STOCK intake, and it's sucking in water. it did this before i switched to the CF hood, so i am really not sure why this happens. my splash guard is still intact, so it makes no sense to me.

has anyone else experienced this? please tell me i'm not nuts. :(

does your cf hood have a breather or "scoop"? and also is your cf hood impregnated with epoxy?

it has nothing to do with the hood. this was an issue long before i had anything aftermarket on the car.

in my situation, it's sucking in water directly at the opening of the intake pipe.

what year is ur car, idk about 97 and below but if its a 98-02 there is a "dual" intake element. most commonly on non-s models rarely on 98-99 yrs the front bumper design allows too much air and at times it has quite a bit of suction that it affects the cars performance. my 01 S has the foglights to prevent the "extra" flow. so it does not affect it as much. but since its so low it just suck up water from the bottom.

it has to be a defet somewhere because ur getting too much in there. either the bottom part of the intake is not operating the way it should and its taking in air from the top and affectin its performance.

Get A Short Ram Intake Or Cold Air Intake From Aem, They Have A Device To Prevent Water From Going In The Intake Or Inside Your Engine, Also Get A Moisture Remover From An Autoparts Store.

Mine has been doing that since I got it the car new - pulled the element out to see if water made it all the way back there - did not even come close to touching it. Seems that the water got pulled from the intake opening behind the headlamp assembly and into the resonator inside the fender. Eventually, the water drains out through holes punched in through the bottom and sound returns to normal.

Doesn't hurt anything - just sounds real bad because of the change in resonance. I have all body shields under there - nothing missing. Does it anytime it rains hard enough to have any standing water on the road. If there is no rain, but big puddles of water - I don't really notice any change in intake sound.

Also there have been cases where water has splashed up into the exhaust (probably got in between the exhaust manifold and its donut) cooled the pipe enough to change the resonant frequency of the system. No leaks in intake or exhaust system, no major modifications done to them either (OEM air box and exhaust system) - 121K miles on the 2002 and so far so good.

at least you know that if anything happens the dealer should fix it at a "no cost" discretion. Personally i had another piece of pipe re-directed when i had the stock element to prevent hyrdrolock. it worked well. (it was just a piece of rubber pipe )purchased from home depot.

if you knew how retarded my dealership was, you'd realize that statement was false. they'd do everything in their power to blame me. :)
