Wheel arch moldings

    My car has little rubber moldings over the wheel openings like in the pic above (not my car though). What the hell were those supposed to be for? When I got my car painted they just painted over them, so now I'm afriad if I try to peel them off, there will be green paint underneath.

    Why do some cars have that molding and yet others don't?
