    what is LIFT? XRS shifter?

as you guys know, i got my 05 XRS about 3 weeks or so ago, i dunno. Anyways, this is my first Toyota and i feel pretty satisfied with my recent purchase, i was curious, what exactly is lift and how does it work? The salesman seemed to know what he was talking about when he told me that the lobes of the cam are manipulated at a certain RPM (approx 6500)...? is this correct?

secondly: is it just me or is the XRS shifter kinda sloppy?

    thanks....

You have the 2ZZ-GE engine with VVTL-i. Variable valve timing and lift with intelligence. VVT alters the cam timing by advancing and retarding as needed. The lift means there is a low cam profile for low-rev operation (below 6500rpm) and a high cam profile for high rpms. It opens the valves more for better airflow and better performance in high rpms.

VVT-i is only used on the intake camshaft. Is VVTL-i used on the exhaust cam or does it work on the intake cam only??

No on the Toyota web site it was explained through an animated diagram that VVTL-i alters flow in both the exhaust and intake ( Someone posted link to that diagram at toyota.com a while ago. Not sure who??)

The "Left" of VVTL-i is just like the old Honda Vtec.
When you reach 6500rmp (no 100% sure about the number), the intake cam will shift to a high cam. It wall "push" the intake valves "deeper" to get more air into the engine.

For the VVT-i, it's will open the exhaust valves (not wide open, just a little bit) too when the engine is breathing in air. It will creat better air flow when the enigne breath in.
