what happened to fuel efficient cars?

It seems like they are totally gone.

Even under the revised EPA mileage estimates our 8th gen rollas get 37mpg highway.. what else (2006 & newer) can match that not being a hybrid?

    The yaris can't.. 36mpg

We've had 10 years to make cars more efficient yet it's getting worse. Along with this the Scion IQ 2011-2012 is only getting one engine choice. 1.3L 37mpg.

Is there a company that knows how to make an efficient car any more?

most probably cause they treat cars like appliances now, get the new *XYZ car* with...
    dual dvd players
    gps
power all, even power windshield (whatever that is)
and we managed to up the HP from that efficiency improvement we could had used to up the mpg!
look at our new stylish that it's as good as a barn door! but has a nice grill and it's safe for pedestrians getting hit
and our underside isn't any better!

    lmao. True.

I save 2mpg without my subs but the lack of bass from the 5.1/4 speakers kill.

That said lighter cars do get more mpg. But people would rather have safety and other peripherals than 40mpg.

based on that, people are really dumb. my rolla gets a 3.5/5 crash rating, I'm fine with that.

If scion does ever come out with the iQ I have an expensive but very nice plan. Buy scion iQ, buy jdm iQ turbo diesel and strip it for parts, crush jdm car.. install all the good parts in us model. boom, 50mpg commuter car, win.

Yah. I have figured that weight is everything. The more luxury people get, yes, even A/C, the less efficient cars are.

If you're really anal about it, take the a/c and p/s off, strip the car down, and toss your lead foot out the window.

Hell, while you're at it, lose a pound or two.

    EDIT:
Also upgrade those pulleys to efficient ones. That might help as well. Hmm, get a tune too for what kind of driving you will do. City/Hwy/mix.

    EDIT2:
Just thought about it again... If you will be a hwy dude, high flow intake and exhaust helps right?

safety rating actually changes each year. if your car had a 3.5/5 way back when when you got the car, its probably now more like a 2/5 or less.

Also in the past decade, a huge chunk of money has gone into alternative fuel research which could explain partially why the MPG has not gone up. also, technologically speaking we maybe reaching limit as to our MPG. Lastly, as much as I hate to say it, Americans are like Jeremy Clarkson who prefers "PO:what:EEEERR" over economy and with our obesity epidemic we can't have small K cars with 50+MPG potentials.

I think in general people are more concerned with comfort and horsepower. Look at the size of the new Corolla's, they are as big as the Camry's from the early 90's.

The one car that seems to be worth it as far as mpg goes is the new Sonata. Midsize sedan with 200 hp and 35 mpg sounds great to me

I have Unorthodox pulley sets for both my Corolla and GSR. Gains for the Corolla have been little of course, but since I've had them, they've paid for themselves in gas savings.

I'm 6'4. I need large vehicles for the simple fact of I don't like muscle cramps while driving. Good examples:
350Z. Neat little car. Seats are so narrow the bars sit right under the back of my legs, which are then asleep 10 minutes later.
Celica: Seat all the way back, couldn't get in. Literally, could not get into this vehicle at all.
2003 Tacoma: Could get in, but you could tell after some miles it would get cramped.
2003 Tundra: Now we come to why I bought the Tundra. Easy to get in. Can drive for hours without the slightest discomfort.

Currently getting about 15mpg on the truck. Granted I am running 33" tires and stock gearing.

I finally found one! but I've had such bad experiences with ford in the past I really can't stand them.

    2011 Ford Fiesta
    32 city, 40 highway w/6 speed automatic

looks like a nice little car, mpg is good, performance is between an 02 and 03 corolla.

    <rant>
My story with ford: I had a mustang, the engine blew up because they had no clue how to build an aluminum engine. Ford refused to fix it under their own voluntary recall (only honored for 6 months from first notice and only mailed to original owners) so I was stuck with a $2100 repair bill. A year later, it blew again.

So, mr ford stealership. If you'd like to refund me the $2100 you owe me thanks to your dishonest recall policy, I'll try your cars again.

I've found a nice compromise. New Si...I don't drive like crazy and usually get between 29 and 31 MPG with a mix of city and highway. Plus its fairly quick with 197 hp...for now...

not everyone can afford a "fast" car. and fast is deffinately a matter of opinion. And how practical is is a vette? They get crappy gas mileage, are small as hell and cost a lot to mod/repair. Its great for a weekend car but what about someone that can only afford one car but once a mix of performance and economy?

Because auto makers arent going to produce what the public doesnt want. And right now the public wants big SUVs and fast engines.

Fuel Efficiency and the above is an oxymoron

C5 Vette's get 25-28 on the highway. I'm 6'4, last Vette I got into I had to move the seat forward it was so roomy.
