    what engine can I put into a 1987 mr2

Heres another question. What engine is suggested to be put into a 1987 mr2? Ive read up about the 3sgte and the 4agze. From what it looks like the 3sgte is the way to go but im not sure. Im just looking around at a small cheap car to buy and so far I've found a 91 civic or a 87 mr2. Obviously the mr2 is probably the way to go. Dunno though. Either way I just want to get a cheap small coupe no more than $500 so I can upgrade the power.

I don't think the 3SGTE will fit into the MKI MR2. You'd be better off with the 4agze, since it was meant for that chassis. That gen only makes 140hp, but I'm sure you can change the pulley and add some boltons to get at least 160 out of it.

eh...the civic would probably be more reliable, honestly. motor swaps for those are cheap as hell, too.

...though i'm not a fan of Honda, that's the direction i'd go with it...especially if you want a cheap, small car. with all the money you'd put into the MR2 keeping it running right, you could make the civic be *silly* fast. one question, though - is the civic a hatch, coupe, or sedan?

yes it will, it's called an mk1.5

    check out www.mr2oc.com

    i'm on there (same name)

i have an 87 mr2 with an ae101 4agze & e51 transmission..... it moves pretty good..... i've kept up with newer z28's and even a newer vette (don't know what trim) getting on the freeway up to 95mph (i had boost leaks then too)

    If they can fit a 32v Northstar V8 in there, a 3SGTE shouldn't be too difficult.. ;)

yeah true...... the honda is a coupe.... and although im not saying i wont go with the honda (im going to check out both cars in the morning, i really do prefer the mr2 mostly because of how its set up with it being a roadster and also since this one has a t-top and is rwd to begin with. Whats the possibility of putting a 5sfe in it like the 91 has? or is it not compatible?

that would be awesome to get a northstart in but thats a little too much gas money down the drain lol

the 5SFE would be a waste. Its an economy engine (camry). The 4AGE already in the MR2 is better.

why swap a 2.2L into a 2200lb car when you can make more power with a 1.6, for less money?

so you saying that even though the 5sfe has more power that in the long run there would be more power since the 4age is lighter?

    how about a 5age

any A series will fit...... a 5s-fe has been put in, a 32V northstar engine has been put into one.... many have gotten 3s-gte or 5s-gte..... there are still some mk1's with the original HKS twincharge kits on them floating around..... there are many different v6 swaps that have been done, everything from toyota motors to ford SHO motors.....

heres another question.... im definitely going to buy it im going out today later on to check the car out and possibly drive it (its a privately owned car). This car is listed as being $2200 in the classifieds yet I went onto kbb.com and entered in every option it has available and even entered in excellent condition and 119,000 miles which the guy said the car has and it listed the car as $1,300. Should I get him to come down on the offer? The car has t-tops, A/C, power locks, windows, cruise.

only is it's supercharged...... the non s/c models don't hold much for value.... unless it's in pristine condition and the t-tops don't leak

Dude, get the 4AGZE and build it. There's more than enough aftermarket parts for that engine and with the right tuner, that car can be crazy fast. But if you can fit the 3SGTE with no problems, I would go that route because it's far supperior to the 4AGZE.

if you're talking gze & 3sgte.... the 20V is kinda down the line a bit......

the mr2 (in dry) with a gze in the back is surprisingly hard to swap ends IF YOU'RE SAFE..... i haven't lost control in mine once, however i have come very close in the rain

actually i would have to go with something completely different...... something i am definately giving thought to...... 4agze smallport stripped of it's supercharger parts, put the n/a counterparts on, add a T25, run it on megasquirt, and mate it to a c52 transmission. Proven by another mr2 owner for over 200whp and 200wtq
