    what do you think?

so what do you think? should the officer be charged or no?

my answer is no. his kid was in a stolen truck being used to ram a cop car with another cop trapped inside so what does he expect? the father said oh, why not use taser, or pepper spray, etc. stupid guy, how does he expect the cops to pepper spray or taser the driver when he's ramming the cop car!

i believe that any cop in the same situation would have opened fire at the truck.

Father of slain teen wants officer charged over death

The father of 16-year-old Kyle Andrew Tait, who was shot dead after a police chase of a stolen SUV, is angry that an officer pulled a gun on his son.

"I just feel outraged," Kevin Tait said yesterday. "It makes me so mad. There's lots of situations that justify shooting . . . and here's a situation where nobody has any weapons -- it's a bunch of kids -- and they start shooting."

Kyle, of Surrey, was in the front passenger seat of a stolen SUV that was being chased by New Westminster police Tuesday.

The five-minute pursuit ended in a quiet residential neighbourhood in Burnaby with a police officer firing three rounds at the black Yukon GMC, killing Kyle and injuring the 18-year-old driver. Three other passengers in the back -- two 14-year-old girls and a 15-year-old boy -- escaped unharmed.

"Why didn't they shoot out the tires? The driver's window was smashed out, why couldn't they mace the driver?

"Why couldn't they use a Taser and stun the driver?" said Tait. "There were enough police around to physically rip them out of the door. There were so many other things they could've done and they chose that."

Tait said police have not yet given the family an explanation of what happened.

But he said the family is looking into legal action and would like to see the officer -- a 15-year veteran with the New Westminster police force -- charged with wrongful death.

Staff-Sgt. Casey Dehaas said the officer fired at the Yukon to stop the SUV from ramming into a police cruiser and injuring or killing a rookie officer trapped in the passenger seat.

"A 5,000-pound weapon [was] being used to ram and injure a police officer, and the officer felt that in order to stop his partner from being possibly killed, he fired the rounds to stop that vehicle," said Dehaas.

Police said the Yukon stopped on Burns Street in Burnaby after a five-minute chase. A police cruiser then pulled in front of the SUV at an angle to prevent it from fleeing any farther, said police.

"At this point, the suspect vehicle drove forward, ramming into the side of the police vehicle directly into the passenger side," said Dehaas.

The collision caused the police cruiser to slide four to six metres across the road into a parked car. The officer who was driving got out of the car, but his partner, a rookie on his third day of duty, was trapped inside, said Dehaas.

The officer standing outside yelled for the teens to get out, but the driver continued ramming into the police car, said Dehaas. That's when the police officer opened fire.

The officer who fired the shots is a member of the Emergency Response Team and one of the force's regular firearms instructors. He has been put on leave while the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team investigates.

Anyone who thinks the cop acted to harshly is retarded. Plain and simple. The father of the dead child claims neither of the suspects (they are NOT victims) had any weapons. NEWS FLASH asshole, a vehicle is just as much a weapon as a gun, in fact, in many cases, a vehicle can be MORE deadly than a gun.

The amount of officers on the scene has nothing to do with the situation. I don't care if there are 100 officers, if the person is driving a large SUV, it won't be hard running all of them over.

I hate the pepper spray defense, especially in a case like this. First off, pepper spray depends a lot on the weather and the direction of the wind. Second, pepper spray may not be effective on the suspect. Then what?

The taser arguement doesn't work here either considering you want the officer to aim it through a busted window while his partner is being rammed by a fucking SUV.

Shoot out the tires? This guys thinks shooting out the tires will automatically render the vehicle useless. What a fucking dumbass.

Usually I say people are entitled to their opinions, but anyone who thinks this cop did something wrong is a dumbass. People like this asshole expect police to use non-deadly force in a situation where a person, an officer no less, is in danger? He's a douche and his child should have been a blowjob.

it was on the radio yesterday that the kid who died have a history of stealing cars or something like that. the father said something like his kid is not a bad kid at all, he's just going through a rebellious stage or some stupid shit like that. well, now that he's dead - he won't have to go through some rebellious stage anymore! it's tough to loose a son/daughter but when your kid died doing something stupid like this... then shut the hell up and just take it. don't be trying to blame it on the cops and whoever.

    Yeah I agree.

I went through a rebellious stage too. You know what I did? Grew a tri-hawk, painted it green, pierced my brow, joined a band, sang about how the government eats dick, and smoked pot.

Sure the last one isn't legal, but ya know, it really wasn't hurting anyone but me. To use the "rebellious stage" as a means to justify your child STEALING CARS and RAMMING POLICE CRUISERS is equal to blaming a wife for murdering her husband on it being "that time of the month".

yea, sad, too bad the cop couldn't have just injured the kids and caused a non fatal end to the situation. Sadly, the kids rolled the dice and it was their number, thats always the chance you take when you make such a bad decision

They shot a fellow TAIT?!? Oh hell no! INVADE CANADA!! LOL! Just kidding folks...sad to lose one of us though...That said, I'm a firm believer that thieves are the lowest form of criminal. If somebody took my just-gotten car I'd want the bastard dead too! Cops have guns for a reason. And one of them is to stop criminals who pose more harm to society at large alive than they do dead. In my opinion, while I don't see it necessary to give the cop a medal of honour, it should be noted that he did his job.
