What causes transmission slippage and how do I fix it

I think I have a slippage problem. Last year when I was driving in the snow my car locked up because I drove over the painted white line in the street while there was snow on the ground.Does that happen to all cars or do I have a slippage problem?

if your car "locked up" when going over a low traction surface I would say you have differential problems. A slipping transmission is much different. When a trans is slipping it will seem like your car is in neutral when you try to accelerate. Either problem is very bad. You are looking at a trans rebuild or replacement either way.

change the filter and fluid and see if that helps .If it dont you can have some one tighten the bands up or just get it rebuilt of find a used one with low miles on it..I think getting a used one will be the cheapest way to go.

have your clutch master checked, if the problem is still there... maybe the clutch disk/ cover and release bearings need to be replaced...

I have an automatic and when i put it into drive sometimes and put my foot on the gas it revvs high and then takes off. Maybe I might need a new tranny. for a 98 that is.

I don't know about the 'lock-up', but I had issues with the cable shift for my auto transmission on the 99 Corolla.

It used to go from Drive to Neutral sometimes, and when I accelarated the engine revved up.

I fixed it by adjusting the cable shifter. The nut which held the cable to the tranny was rusted and after WD 40 and some adjustments, the problem went away.
