    Weekend project, 1ZZFE swap

So my roomate has this 1998 Corolla with a blown engine in it. He was doing about 100 MPH when it seized up. Being the nice guy I am I told him I could swap in an engine with 20k on it for half what his mechanic wanted. 72 Hours later the beast runs again.

    The specimen:

The engine only had 78k miles on it, it had good oil and everything, what the heck happened to make it bust a rod. The inside of the aluminum block isn't a pretty sight.

Also, I can't get the transmission (3SPD) to engage. We hooked up the crank, the shift cable works fine, there is fluid in the differential, it will go from park to neutral just fine. Could the high speed have damaged the transmission?

Those blown pieces remind me of a RSX-S who mis-shifted. Not nice.

the highspeed lockup could have very well damaged the tranny..... you should have pulled the case apart when you had the chance......

the tranny absorbed a huge shock when the engine let go (assuming he was in gear)......

what did he do? throw in it L or R when doin 100? i've done over 100 plenty of times (even hit the governor @ 117 mph a few times) on my 99 (now like 54,000 miles on it) and have never had a problem.

Crapomatic transmission (3spd). It was in D when the thing blew and he didn't put it into neutral. I'm assuming now it is shot, for some reason when we did the engine we thought the transmission would be ok.

Next weekend is the transmission replacement, that should be fun. The transmission should only run ~ $300 for one with 20k though, so the thing will be like new.
