    warranty work on s/c engine

Toyota called and said the #4 cylinder falled and threw a bearing, and will cover it under warranty. My car died last friday and the have been earing it apart since Tue. Now the get to start rebuilding Mon. or Tue. when they get parts. I had it installed by them in late Oct. and all work has been done by them. I asked yesterday if the knew if it would be covered and the said Toyota makes the final call, from the tone in his voice I think is was expecting them to make me pay.

I think even if you didn't have the supercharger, Toyota should still repair your car at no cost as it falls under warranty-especially with the TRD supercharger.

I am fortunate that I didn't have to pay for all the repair work TOyota is doing to me. I went to the dealer 8 times already because of the check engine light. Yup, it's still coming on. They replaced engine wire loom due to high resistance, replaced the stock ECU, replaced the O2 sensor 4 times, new adapater for TRD ECU, and new catalytic convertor. LIght is still on which is frustrating. I've had thousands of dollars worth of repairs already. I love it. That means I got all these new parts for nothing. THey might as well replace all the electronics and engine for nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By all means, continue to get one if you still plan to. I am just unfortunate to have this problem. Most of the supercharger owners have no problems at all with it. There is some unkown factor hidden in the car's system that is mysteriously causing the check engine to come on. Toyota has already contacted TRD to get on this because there is nothing wrong with the Toyota side of it. The techs conculded that it has to be the TRD parts that is causing this. The TRD technician installed the supecharger on a lot of the Tacoma's and Tundra's, and a few Corollas as well with no problems. They are a bit frustrated with this as I am too. They really want to get it fixed and they are determined to get to the bottom of this. It's good that they have that mentality.

So I have an appointment next Tuesday morning to see what they are going to do. The car drives great otherwise, just the dummy light keeps popping up.

As far as warranty issues go, Toyota ultimately will have the last word whether or not your engine problems fall under any kind of warranty. This is a good case where a simple item (such as a OEM oil filter) can make a large difference between fully covered through the factory warranty and not being covered. As far as I was aware, the addition of the TRD S/C, in effect voids the factory Toyota warranty and a one year TRD warranty (on the S/C) is implemented in place of the Toyota warranty. I can see where Toyota/TRD will potentially have grounds to not warranty the engine repairs... If the S/C was not installed by a dealer, if a CAI (which hasn't been approved for use with the S/C) was installed, the S/C installed is originally made for a Matrix... these could all spell disaster in terms of coverage in warranty work.

Good luck to both of you in your dealings with Toyota.

This is why the only mods I'll be doing under the hood will be TRD parts installed at the dealer... At least until the factory warranty runs out. We all know we pay for that warranty in the price of the car. I'm not going to let that money be spent for nothing.

    Hey Tom,

Did Toyota tell you which code was thrown?

I don't know the code number but the tech say that the code for the O2 sensor keeps coming up every time. We know that cannot be because that's been replaced so many times already, both of them-plus the catalytic convertor was replaced too.

The mods that I have are all TRD and all installed by Toyota. I got paranoid with my K&N filter so I took that out and put in a TRD drop filter so the dealer won't complain. The tech noticed my K&N filter but he said that the filter alone should not have caused the problem of the check engine light and so he didn't blame it on the filter. I even tried it with the stock filter and ran it after the tech reset the computer. Still, the light came on.

I should have no warranty issues, so I am not worried about that. So far, Toyota has been eager and happily available to help me with my car problems and determined to get it right, even if it means rigorous attempts at solving the problem. I come as I please without any appointments, but the bad thing is that it takes up a little of my time having to go there often (only once a week now).
