warning.. newb wanna be posted this!

    Hello,
I got a Corolla '96 DX and I dont want to get rid of the car, rather upgrade it.. the thing is that its automatic.. How much estimate would it be to change it to manual and what could i do to give it some extra power? I was thinking of just swapping the guts out which I gues would costa bout $2000 ish... I just want some suggestions that would help my cars power drastically increase and some minor ones as well... thanks

the best thing is to trade your car in and take that 2000 and invest it in something worth while...automatic corolla's really have no potential i hate to say.

    40%? You serious??
I know manual loses about 10-15%. But auto loses 40%??? Ding, that's a lot!

ok ok ok, if you really want to do anything worth while to that automatic car let this be known...and automatic transmission loses as much as 40% of its power to the flywheel, meaing your factory 130 crank hp car is really pushing only 78 wheel hp :p now then tell me if that is worth investing money into? if so then just NOS the shit out of it and MAYBE you will be able to keep up with a stock civic or something

    -my two cents ;)

    i don't think it is quite 40%.
keep in mind automatics weigh more. at least the weight is down low.

are you talking about ALL Automatic Cars or just the corolla? I really Doubt it's 40% that is way too high... cause if that was true, My friends G35 wouldn't pull on my S13 and I'm running an SR20...

But Yeah there is a loss of power between the two trannys. Manual does Seem to pull faster...

Then again he's Asking about tranny swaps. So if anyone was paying attention they would notice that shouldn't they help him instead of making fun of his automatic. I for one am not fixing up my car for speed. We all know that the corolla is not a sports car even though we would like it to be. It's my Daily driver... I guess you buy into a corolla for reliablility and not for speed. Just like an Econ-o-Box Civic (no offense to those who like to fix-up hondas). If anyone bought a corolla to Drag race, You bought the wrong car...Personally I think you should leave the drag racing to the Bigger displacement Engines. . .

    As for Luper...
I'd hate to tell you this but your not going to get much power out of that car. you can try some simple bolt ons like the air-intake, Exhaust. Sorry there isn't really a market for the corolla (unless you drive an 86). I would suggest a tranny swap if you were planning to race. or you can do what I did and buy a 240sx for about $800 and drop a turbo on that KA engine or swap it out for a SR.

    Just my opinion. . .

    <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" /> see people should fix up what ever they please and how ever they please <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" />. Everyone has their own personal taste so let's all just leave it at that <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" />

my old auto 99 with CAI and 2 1/4 catback dyno'd at 109whp .. stock was 120 at the flywheel.. so I bet a stock auto corolla makes about 95-100whp ...

Anyone gat a dyno hook up, I'd be willing to drop my stock auto '99 on there to see...

And not to bust anyone's balls, or whatever, but you CAN make an auto push out 300+ whp, I've seen it done, in a Neon never the less, but it sure as h e double hocky sticks ain't gonna cost under $2k, lol

A good custom built manual or auto/triptronic will run you into the 5k's, same as with that race built 1zz-fe...

As for off the shelf, I'm clueless, I got a '99, I'm going for looks, but yeah I'm gonna put in a customized 4spd auto... Just cause, its not a racer is a mid sized 4 door sedan...

<img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" />. I think it has potential. well. . . Any car has potential if you've the cash. all I'm running is an hks intake,TRD muffler, 2.25 inch strait pipe w/a high-flow cat. Yeah it's not the fastest thing out there, but I still think it's fun to drive. <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" /> . It's auto since I hate driving one of my other cars in traffic since they are all stick. well anyway back to Luper, Just bolt ons are a good start. but if you have the cash I would suggest a tranny swap just to shave a little weight off the car.

yeah i was just referring to the corolla as being an automatic car without potential not all cars in general. obviously a car that comes out of the factory with close to 300hp will perform well regradless of whether its auto/stick

also you might think this is crazy but all the excess bolt that you have if you cut off what you really dont need considering some bolts leave you with like and inch or two of threads just cut it off and you loose about 300 lbs right there by doing that. but thats also costly if you dont know whice bolts to cut. and also for teh tranny hp loss iunno if thats acurate on all cars because i have a custom RAI and a magnaflow exhaust with 2 1/4 in piping no cat or resonators and im pushin bout 140 whp. but i mean do what you wish to your car if you have the money.
