Waterbury, Conn. -- ECP owner Freddie Klies recently completed a new ultra high tech drag sled motor for customer Mark Kulencamp of Loretto, Minnesota. The sled also manufactured at ECP will run in the popular Pro Stock class at professional venues for grass and ice drag racing popular throughout the "snow belt" areas of the United States and Canada.

With rules of this class similar to motorcycles class of the same name, one has to be very creative with engine design and development work. Just like the popular Pro Stock motorcycles, the drag sleds have engine building limitations and vehicle appearance standards that must be met. Recently we completed this newly designed engine for Mark and preliminary runs on the dyno showed wonderful promise for a competitive engine. After a few short tuning runs and some minor port configuration re-designing, the results astounded even us! The result...262.8 horsepower...but here's the impressive part...61 cubic inch!!! That's right, 1000cc's!

That is a whopping 4.295 horsepower per cubic inch! In comparison to our 4 stroke Pro Stock motorcycle counterparts...we would do back flips for 3.2 horsepower per cubic inch. This would put a good 1500cc 4 stroke state-of-the-art NHRA Pro Stock engine at 300 horsepower. Just as with the bikes, the sleds have a maximum engine size limitation and 1000cc's is the limit.This number was met on a day that had only fair weather conditions and we expect that with a good weather day and proper tuning for the weather to be around the 267 horsepower mark. The Rotax based engine has custom made cylinders and heads, crankcase reed inducted carburetion,

and makes 153 foot pounds of torque at 9100 RPM's. I would like to thank Paul Gast for the help with obtaining the second set of the new 48mm Lectron snowmobile carbs ever made that allowed us the opportunity to make this massive horsepower a reality. Makes us wonder if maybe a 2 stroke Top Fuel motorcycle should be in our future! With snowmobilings superior driveline which never has the engine off of it's power curve during shifting and a 1500cc version of this engine...if we are able to retain the 4.295 HP per Cubic Inch scenario, that would put us at 393 Horsepower on carburetors and gasoline only!!! Then, spray 100 horsepower of nitrous Oxide into the thing and look out! With the tiny stature of this engine and driveline...it would allow us to build a motorcycle that we estimate to weigh around 400 pounds and we suspect that the current Top Fuel bikes develop around 1 horsepower per pound of vehicle. This would definitely put us ahead of the game with regard to horsepower to weight ratio of vehicle. Our main concern however would be...Is it reasonable to think that a vehicle that light could safely go well over 200 MPH without trying to fly? Perhaps some Nasa-type aerodynamic engineering will be in our future.
