    vvt-i question

gday. i bought my wife a 1996 corolla s/w new and its been a hassle free car for its entire 250,000km. it is stock standard aside from slightly wider tyres on the original rims and now that my son has his drivers license i will hand him the keys and also i guess the link to this web site so he can hot up his ride lol
i replaced the old car with a 2002 model s/w that is a pretty nice looking car. it sits on 17 inch mags and has been lowered as well as having factory tints etc. i really like the look of this car and it is really nice to drive, way nicer than the old one. the problem i have is the smoothness of acceleration in the new car. it revs up no-where near as quickly as the old car and seems to surge through its power range. i liken the engines performance to a helicopter turbine winding up as it is almost like it accelerates in stages. is this normal for a vvt-i engine? i am not sure but i think the older car would pick up faster than the new one but wouldn't have the same top speed. would that be right also? i don't have all the info on the two cars regarding engine numbers etc as i am at work at the moment but i will track the info down along with some photos of the two cars. any ideas/help appreciated.

Maybe its the wheels, since they're 17's (?).

Dont take my word for it though. I am sick and out of it. Damn pills make you feel dazed!

Its not the rims cause I run both my stock 14's and my 17's and what he described happens no matter what size I run. I guess its just the way that Toyota desgined the car

i am in new zealand and the car is a 1.8 vvt-i. so this is normal behaviour for this engine? bit disappointing really as the old corolla revs smoothly all the way through the range.

yea, 17" always make your car go lots slower compare to the 14" stock.

Put on the stock rimz, tyres back! Then see what VVTi does...:p
Increasing the diameter of the tyre, or its width results in lesser pick (noticeable), more uneconomical drive, and uncalibrated speedometer.

For eg, a 1500cc stock car with much bigger rims than the stock ones will easily LOSE to a 1300cc stock car with stock rims..

From expieience I noticed that the VVTi engine and transmission which toyota gave that engine works much smoother and yeah kinda in stages...

My dad has a 2005ce and i have 1995dx, despited the bigger exhaust diameter, header, and some other free flow mods I still got better acceleration, when I drive the 2005 and step on it it hauls ass off the start and then totally drops off when it reaches 2nd gear, the 7afe engine with its tranny just keeps accelerating when you have the foot to the floor and does it constantly, the 2005 with 1zz-fe will take off hard then drop down to melow ride accelerate again and sorta level off... <--- personal expierience
