    VVT-i head swap questions

Hello, I know this is mainly a corolla fourm, however, we are in the same family. I drive a 97 toyota tacoma 2wd 2.4L 4 banger. The new 05 tacomas come with VVT-i and I was wondering, if I was to do a head swap would I have to do any external oil mods to the head like you would for a v-tec head swap? Also, for those of you with VVT-i, can you feel it kick in? Is it even noticible? I know v-tec is Very noticable, and since I have not had time to test drive something with VVT-i I have no idea if it would even be worth the trouble of putting the VVT-i head on. Thanks for the help

There is no "kick" in with the VVT-i - just works all the time. Only changes valve timing (opening or closing ealier or later, depends on RPM - V-TEC alters valve lift, giving you that "kick"). Basically tries to maximize performance (power and fuel efficiency) over a bigger portion of the available powerband. Probably not worth it - you will still need to plumb oil to the head to actuate the solenoid, similar to a V-TEC. Probably better to do a entire engine swap or go forced induction for more gains for your money.

    Good Luck.
