    VSS (vehicle speed sensor) location?

Does anyone know where this sensor is located? The pictures in my Haynes manual didn't help too much. I'm thinking it's the harness that I see beneath where the battery would sit. Any confirmations on this?

    here ya go!
edit:that pic actually may be slightly incorrect if you have a 5-speed.
1st pic is with an auto

    2nd pic = 5 speed

Thanks. I was right in my assumption then. Hopefully a good cleaning of the harness will cure my probs.

My speedometer is freaking out on me sometimes. It'll bounce up and down, even when parked. It wreaks havok on my transmission's shifting and throws my fuel management tables out of whack when it's happening. I had a P0500 (I think that's what it was) CEL thrown, which was a VSS malfunction.

the newer toyota's use electronic sensors.... similar to abs sensors (that are basically magnetically pulsed on/off to a toothed wheel)...... the sensors can fail, and with bumps or vibrations can give inaccurate readings.... you might wanna try hooking a mult-meter up to the ecu where the signal is shown from the VSS and see if by tapping on the sensor the resistance changes....

your best bet is to replace it, all that wear and tear may have put a hamper on the Transmission Control Unit, which is why it is throwing everything off course.

It fixed itself and has been working fine for weeks now.

just out of curiosity, do you have any metal shavings in your transmission, or any on the magnets or filter on the vehicle? I called up my buddy and he said any light shavings can throw it off.

I haven't checked yet. I did have low trans fluid, then refilled it, and that's when I had the issue. It eventually went away though.
