I don't think it could be that bad. I would ask a mechanic, engineer or someone who knows about and has experience with PVC about whether the fumes would be bad. In other words, don't trust the guy at the hardware store, call a company that manufactures PVC and ask them. That's the only way to know for sure.

pvc pipes dont like heat that much... they tend to release toxic flumes when exposed to high heat.... but i wonder how does pvc intakes sound like... i wonder if they sound better since they dont have that "rattle/tin" sound... *shrug*

try lighting one on fire and smell it... hehe

haha! thats ok! dont worry guys-ive been driving w/ this for at least 6 months-and there are absolutley no problems w/ it. the funny thing is-it never gets hot enough in that area to pose a problem-its weird, but it works! especially when driving-the air rams up it in the fender constantly causing it to cool down from the inside to the outside (it insulates air better as well compared to aluminum)- i too was worried about the heat issue-but its not a problem really-(IF you idle your car for 30 minutes on a REALLY HOT DAY, that might be an issue-) the pvc has no ratteling sound whatsoever-its not as loud as aluminum im sure, but when you first turn the car on-you can hear the sucking sound very loud and clear from the fender.

Yeah but you have to remember that plastic isn't as quickly transfers heat as metals do...

I'm planning to make a pvc intake, but eventually, I think I'll take it to a muffler shop and ask them to use it as a prototype for an aluminim mandrel bent intake.

what does it matter as long as it sucks cooler air from outside... you will see such a minimal gain, almost unnoticable, from an exact aluminum one...

Besides you really don't get very much gain anyways with an intake... Better just to get a highflow filter... K & N or the like...

just looks in the engine bay. the cold air intake and the short ram does nothing. it sucks it cold air, then heat transfer it through the pipe= warm air.

Yeah but if PVC does turn out to give off harmful fumes, I wouldn't want to take a chance.

it's actually against code to install pvc plumbing in a business in some counties out here, because of the harmful fumes it would release during a fire. the alternative is abs plumbing

hmmm..thats wierd-at my work place, wev'e got pvc going everywhere-i guess laws apply differently in different areas-but it does make sense however-flame and pvc dont mix! i guess the fumes can cause quite a headache to those who happen to be nearby..
