intercoolers arent esential for a turbo, they just allow it to have cooler air. Without one a turbo WILL work, but it would suck pretty bad. At least this is what im told.

what the it does is cools the air before it goes into the intake manifold. It is really not needed, but its an upgrade from just a turbo, filter and piping.

dunno bout u guys... but i would rather see one of those kit on a rolla... and if it works good... and have no probs... then get it... otherwise i am not gonna spend 2-3k for a kit that isnt gonna work rite...

I dont know how it would not work though. Most turbos are universal anyway.

its either buy a turbo kit, or buy everything piece by piece. Turbo kit is cheaper and u can always change and fine tune it to your needs.

intercooler would be recommended cuz if not, it will make turbos inefficient cuz all the air that's being rammed is warm/hot air from your engine and u would want the air on the cooler side.

Well, what do you think the supercharger does? it rams tons of warm air into the engine...not a big deal, it still makes power. I would just buy a turbo kit from someone made for our cars...the kit i bought was apparently for an MR-2 so none of the piping worked and the turbo had to be rotated on the manifold for it to fit correctly, along with the damned wastegate needing to be relocated.... just make sure if you buy a kit from soneone its made for our cars.

well i was thinking why u need intercooler on turbo more is that on supercharger, ure air is fed by the pulleys unlike turbo which is fed by the exhaust manifold. so that hot air has to be cooled down somehow cuz it's gonna hit the turbine, and what's gonna be blown by the turbine is also hot air

well i think if hot air by the turbine and combine with the exhaust is too might and it might in the long run put too much stress on the turbine r any valve (correct me if im wrong) it should be better to have cool air than hot air.

you're right about the hot air from the turbo. The turbo gets hot as hell and will warm the air that its compressing from the heat of the turbo, but you have to remember, most of the heat comes from the actual compressing of the air. Air gets hot when its compressed, so while 6PSI from a turbo may be 250 degrees when it comes out, and 7.5 PSI from a supercharger may be the same temperature. It is DEFINITLY a good thing to have an intercooler, but piping for an intercool is a BITCH in our cars. I had to buy $250 worth of mendrel bends for the piping, and its taking a rather creative route through the engine bay. You can run either a turbo or a blower without an intercooler, you just wont make nearly the power, and the chance of detionation is much higher. My friend runs 8PSI through an SR20DE without an intercooler, and he makes tons of power (dont try that on a 1ZZ). I'll have pictures of my turbo when i get the car back from the shop, should be tuesday, but the intercooler looks badass on it :)

That intercooler is actually rather large. My friend has a mazdaspeed protege and this is his intercooler.

Its that little dinky thing next to the radiator. ____^^^^^

actually, the mazdaspeed intercooler is rather small. It comes off of one of the europian turbodiesels, and gets heat soacked way to easliy. One of the reason for this is do you see how its bolted to the raidiator? Have you ever touched a raidator after the cars been on a while? Its hot as hell, and putting the intercooler in contact with it is a stupid idea.
The intercooler I'm using is about 2x that size. The one i bought would've taken about 8' of piping through the engine bay to hoook up...which would've ment insane amounts of turbo lag, and a nice pressure drop.
I'll add up the whoe expenses here
    $1500 for the turbo kit
    $250 for the S-AFC
    $250 for guages and pillar
    $250 for useless intercooler
$250 for mendrel bent piping for intercooler
$1000 installiation which includes custom making downpipe, wastegate bracket, and all intercooler piping.
1 week of install time. So figure around $3500. Its really not worth it to go this route is what i found out. I'll end up with a motor that'll make just as much power as the SF kit would've given me, but with less turbo lag due to the smaller turbo, but, on the same side of the equation, the stock injectors are gonna be pretty close to maxed out, if not totally maxed out, so there's another $400 to upgrade those (unless you can find celica GT-S injectors used.)
