YOU open it up. Take out the filter, then underneath the filter is the bolt that holds it down.

Yep just as if you were to change your air filter pop those two metal tabs to open the box and take out your air filter. After that you can take out the rubber intake hose that connects from the top of the box to the throttle body which should be a size 10mm socket/wrench or a phillips screw driver.... There should be (3) 10 or 12 mm bolts (can't recall) holding down the stock box, I suggest using a very long extension to get them out for just less hassle. There you go the stock box is out!.... Just be very careful with the MAF sensor, they are very sensitive and they can break easily.... Just out of curiosity, are you doing a CAI or a SRI? Cause if you're doing a CAI you'll need to remove your resonator which sits on the same side the stock air box, just gotta remove the fender liner and is a box looking plastic container which sits right on the wheel well.

Thing is, there are very few intakes made for this car, and all of them are Short-Ram intakes with the filter sitting right above the exhaust manifold. All they do is suck hot air into the engine which hurts, not helps, your performance.

If you insist on installing one, I have an Injen SRI I'll sell you real cheap.

I had one of those Injen SRI's on my 98 and it helped a little bit and made the engine compartment look all nice and shiny lol.... I think ELP was the only company that ever made a CAI for the 8thgen right?

I believe you are correct about ELP.

I found my Injen real cheap, so I thought "What the hell? Give it a shot." That thing hurt my performance so bad that I removed it after being on the car for only 2 hours.

I put the stock airbox back in and got a K&N filter. The K&N filter does better than that SRI ever will.

That bad? dang, mine wasn't all that bad. I also tried the ELP CAI for mine though a crappy fit it made it sound a bit better and run slightly better than the Injen SRI.... It'd be cool if someone would make CAI's for the 8thgens cause they would sell like crazy!

Actually, ELP recently made another batch. However, they though they would sell well when they started making them, but surprise... they didn't. Corolla owners are cheap. Period.

You can only get them off of other members now. I sold mine a while back. Pretty much at full price too.

so i can fully open the lid of the stock airbox?
yeh i open up the 2 metal tabs and i dont know if its just me but its hard to open the lid. and it seem slike if i try opening it some more i would brake it. would i have to unscrew the 2 screws on the MAF sensor and the vacumm sensor first or do i just pop open the 2 metal tabs and pry open the lid?

elp intake was a poor design, completely remove the stock air filter box and move the battery back to were it used to sit, then build your own intake using spectre parts without having to bend around the battery.

When you open the lid on top you have to kinda pull, tug towards you a little bit since there are these tabs that go into some holes that also help keep the top down along with those two metal tabs.

The MAF sensor and the vacuum sensor are the last things that should come off (at least I did cause like I mentioned, the MAF sensor is very sensitive and can break easily and man they are EXPENSIVE).

Man I should grab someone's 8thgen and do a DIY on this lol

A "cool sound" and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at 7-Eleven. What good is sound if you don't have anything to back it up with?

And for that matter, why is sound so important? It doesn't really do anything for performance any more than slapping on decals for equipment you don't have.
