your alternator might be dying. from experience, i used to drive a 1991 toyota 4runner. and the first thing to go was the starter... then a couple weeks was the alternator, then the batt. next time, i'm changing those three at the same time. i dunno, that's just me. it also happened to my 1998 chevy malibu. all three in a month!

tried to start but only clicks

I tried to start my car today. All i got from the engine was a clicking noise. What could be the problem? it was fine yesterday around 7 or 8 pm. This is the first time it happened.

damn.. anyone know what the cost might be... would the starter just fail out of the blue ? or is there things that lead up to a bad starter?

before you go for the starter try to jump start it, clicking noise also is associated with dying battery, I had that happen to me after my alternator blew and I drove on the battery all the way from NJ to NYC with battery dying on me on west side highway.

    So check your battery first.

well .. maybe it could be my battery .. but the tachometer lights ex. Check engine, seat belt, and oil lights turn on. Well .. i think i might need a new battery since my system eats most of it up. Sometimes my voltage drops to 11's. i guess i'll see after i get off of work.

I had this happen to me saturday. I replaced the battery (because it wouldn't jump) and it happened again 2 days later. I had to get my starter replaced (the part alone was $200), and now it works fine. I say it's the starter.

if its a reppetative clicking (like machine gun) its your battery low . if its one single click , its the sylinoid* in your starter , for some reason there common to go on the corollas.

water pumps are different story. on my old ae92 my water pump seized and the belt snapped. that caused the radior to go bad... then that casued the cooling and oiling system to go bad... it was a chain reaction...

but.. yeah, back to the ignition and starters

Get your starter checked, too. I replaced my battery Saturday and my car was fine until Monday night. Then the clicking came back and I could only start the car by pushing it really fast and then popping the clutch.

In short: GET YOUR STARTER CHECKED.
