    Re: TRD seat

you get what you paid for. you don't see any cheap shitty seats in those show cars in the magazines. you see sparco, momo stuff like that. not matrix, arospeed etc... they probably woudlnt even take asecond look at your car if you have cheapo seats.

id probably get it if i still had my car for a while oh well.

my dad works at the parts warehouse here in jacksonville, so i'm going to be able to get them at dealer cost, but that is if i like the seats enough to buy them.

Well for the rest of us mortals, that don't have connections to a Toyota parts warehouse, XRS seats will be expensive.

Yes, you have that correct my friend!! I finally ponied up to my local Toyota parts counter, and asked the guy about "buying a new seat." His answer? "Oh, geez, you don't want to do that!!!" He recommended just going and buying a new car, instead!

Anyway, so you can't just "buy a new seat." No, you have to buy all the pieces and put them together. Seat back, seat back cover (fabric), seat cushion, seat cushion springs, seat cushion cover, seat "frame" (bottom plastic part), seat bracket, and on and on and on. A rough estimate would be something like $1,200 - $1,500. And no, you don't get leather for that, either! :(

As for the XRS seat, my dealer had a new Scion xb in the showroom -- gosh, that seat sure looked familiar!! Looks a whole lot like the Corolla XRS seat -- if not identical, it's awful dang close. So, I jumped in and tried it out. Firmer, as I expected, and nice bolstering. I'm really really really not so sure about the seat cushion, though -- seemed "not long enough, either" and didn't really give me all of the "thigh support" I was hoping to see. Definitely better than the current Corolla seat, but $1,500 better?? Well, let's just hope the XRS seat will be "not so dang close." At any rate, it's "auto show" season, so get out there and sit in some Scions if you can find 'em.

As for my seat, I'm in a big waffle mode. Shoot, you could probably outfit the whole interior in leather for $1,500. And, the original seat isn't that far off -- just add some bolstering on the sides of the seat cushion, and a bigger one plus a "forward extension" at the front, and then subtly change the overall level of the seat cushion so that the thigh support hits you at the front of the seat instead of the middle, and you've got it. Heck, buy the "seat cushion" from some other model that's got a good seat -- just like you'd have to buy the XRS seat cushion -- and have an upholstery shop stuff that into your existing seat somehow.

Bottom line, I'm thinking "hey, let's go see what an upholstery shop can do for me," rather than getting raped at the Toyota parts counter. I bet you could do a whole bunch of good for just a couple of hundred dollars. Not that I don't find having a shop totally work over the seat quite a bit scary -- who knows that they won't make it oh, so horrifyingly worse? I think the main thing is that I would BE THERE while they worked, and make sure they fit it to me with what I want. No way should you ever just let them "have at it" and come back later to see what they cooked up. At any rate, that's the way I'm thinking lately....

Too bad an Accord seat wouldn't fit. I was pretty happy with the seat (and the car) when I drove one about 3 weeks ago.

Are there other Toyota seats that would fit out cars? If so, there's a huge market for used parts... I could get used to a Camry seat.

    bimmernut,

You might already have seen my bit about the Solara seat, here:

    topic 5308

That looks like a dead ringer for the Corolla XRS seat. Wonder how much a Solara seat with "Dark Stone" leather would cost?? :p Solara also has a power-seat option, which would be cool. A power Lexus IS 300 seat would be very nice -- I tried one of those, and that would be about the best thing imagineable. And, you'd be far more likely to find a used IS 300 seat than a 2004 Solara seat used. And, I suppose there's got to be some kind of shop out there that could make the dang thing fit into a Corolla, and then feed some power to it so you could adjust the thing.

None of this sounds cheap, though!!
