TRD SC WARNING - esp for DIY and those thinking about buying

First, let me start by saying that this is my personal experience, and as always, yours may vary. This is an abbreviated version, if you have any questions on the details, feel free to PM or IM me.

    1. Bought the Supercharger Unit Alone last May – No TRD ECU
    2. Installed by Rick with a Unichip – DIY One-Year Warranty Applies
    3. Ran fine until December/January
    4. Grinding sound coming from the nose unit, most likely Bearing went bad
    5. Called TRD, was told to take to dealer because they are “Eyes and Ears”
    6. Called dealer, faxed receipt to them, then was told Toyota won’t warranty because I did not buy the TRD ECU
    7. Called TRD to ask why, they claimed they do not sell the SC alone without the ECU even though I apparently did and have a receipt to prove it.
    8. Went to local Magnuson dealer, was very friendly and willing to help.
    9. Magnuson Customer Service is AWESOME! We shipped the entire SC to them, they diagnosed it, found it was only a bearing that went bad, and covered it under warranty

Bottom line, TRD did NOT WARRANTY the Supercharger like they advertised with the 1 year DIY warranty. Luckily, Magnuson was good enough to cover me under warranty and provide excellent customer service while doing so. I know some will say TRD is right because I didn’t buy the install kit. Well, that is against the law – Magnuson Moss Act clearly states that TRD cannot force me to buy an add on part (ECU) in order to honor an advertised warranty. The stupid part is that the defective bearing has NOTHING to do with an ECU or the Install Kit. Furthermore, they called one of their customers a liar to his face. I told TRD I bought the SC from Sterling McCall, that it is still being advertised on MO.com for sale without the ECU, that I could give him the SKU of the part I purchased, and even link him to the TRD site where the SKU is advertised. The TRD rep kept telling me I am a liar because TRD doesn’t sell the SC without the Install Kit. Fuck TRD!

I guess its not worth buy the trd supercharger from toyota dealership and its better off buy or ordering from a performance shop and make the shop install the supercharger,so if anything goes wrong you could blame the shop and they could fix it for free or atleast help find the problem.

yea i think toyota dealers need to be a lot more receptive to us who like to modify our cars. especially if trd is going to be making parts themselves for us to use. i was told that my modified grill voided my warranty on a bolt on the fron end breaking off... and the tried to tell me that my motor mounts inserts voided the powertrain warranty... that one didnt stick tho.
