    TRD MUFFLER vs. CAT-BACK

I'm thinking about upgrading my stock exhaust on my '01. The engine (VVT-I) and intake are also stock.

What would be quieter a TRD muffler or a Cat-Back?

Are there any dyno results for either upgrade?

I'll probably go custom (UNLESS THERE IS ANOTHER GOOD OPTION) 2.25" piping and a straight-through muffler if I go with a Cat-back.

    Thanks

get trd muffler if you want minimal hp increase without loosing lots of torque.

want more hp increase and lots of torque loss, get catback

also TRD= less noise a bit high pitched
catback=more deeper but a better payoff.
becareful as some inspection stations will not let your car pass if not cat is there unless you put a dummy but emissions testing will reveal the truth.

Both good points. I think I'm leaning toward the TRD setup.

Has anyone had a problem with a Cat-Back in California--either with cops or smog checks? (I know the TRD muffler is good to go)

welll... for 98-02 corollas, the cat is actually part of the catback piping.
what i'd suggest is that if you know someone who can do a smogcheck hookup for you, i say just bang out the inners of the cat. That will make it visually pass the smog so cops dont fuck with you. You could say your cat is bad if it sounds too loud. And for daily driving, i wouldn't go over 2 1/4 inch piping. anything more would cause a very noticable loss of torque.

    more math...

less torque = higher rpm to start off
higher rpm start = wear out clutch (quicker)
    .. that's all i could think of.

    TRD + 2.25" catback = :thumb:

okay do what my friend did he just chopped off his muffler and resonator and just added a tip at the end and it sounds pretty good and is not loud at all.
He just paid 25 bucks with a resonated tip which is a 3 inch tip.

That's a good point. I learned to drive a stick on my car, so I didn't know if it was just me or what, but it seemed like I had to rev the car a little high to get going from a stop. I have a catback and an intake, so I suppose that's why.
