    TRD Helical LSD

I got a great deal on a discontinued TRD Helical LSD from Japan (which also works for Matrix, MR2, Corolla, and Vibe) and was wondering if anybody here has installed one on a Celica. The local dealer charges $120/hour and quoted 6 to 7 hours, but they weren't sure as they've never done this particular job. Any GT-S owners out there with TRD Helical LSD know roughly how many hours it took to install?

The dealer also said I'm responsible for supplying all parts needed to complete the installation, as they have no shop manual for the TRD Helical LSD and wouldn't know what was needed unless theyopened up my transmission/transaxle/LSD and looked at it. I've been told by someone once before that I'd need the correct sized shims. Anybody know what sized shims and how many I should get? A part number would be helpful. Also, are there any other parts I should order to be ready for installation?

    Thanks!!

Not sure what the "book" time is on labor hours - but I would suspect it should be around that ballpark number, more or less, that what was quoted for you, assuming it was a competent shop. I've seen quotes for $600-$800 for an LSD install. You're right about the shims - there is no "set" size for this install - generally easy and cheaper to get a set of these. This is for adjusting the differential preload - an important step that should not be brushed off.

Since the shop specifically told you that they haven't worked on this install before - that would tell me to look elsewhere for an install shop. Unless you know them very well and they hook you up - I wouldn't feel comfortable with them using me as a guinea pig LSD install.

Where are you located? Talk to local performance shops that have experience with Toyotas preferrably(although those may be few and far betweem), but you at least want someplace where they have some experience installing a LSD.

an average technician charges 80$ per hour of labor. And from experience, i know that it takes about 6 hours to take out and replace the transmisison. i'd look to a local performance shop to install it though because i doubt toyota will warranty it since it isnt a usdm toyota part. good luck and congrats dude :)

best thing to do is pull out the tranny yourself and take it to a shop on a flatbed.

^^i'd do that, but i have neither the tools (garage-less apt.) nor the time to pull it myself. yeah, i've found one place back home in san diego (powaytransmissions.com) that specializes in lsd work. but ill be in fremont, ca thru june. anybody familiar with good shops in the bay area?

and nobody knows the quantity and measurement of the shims i should order?
