TRD CAI FILTER DENT BECAUSE OF FOGLIGHT

    Hi,

I read a thread on matrixowners.com and this corolla s owner said he put a TRD CAI into his Corolla S, which was a tight fit behind the foglights, and caused a dent to his TRD filter. Is that true??

I just placed an order for the TRD CAI.

For those who have the TRD CAI installed in their Corolla S, please let me know if this is true. I'm worried about it. I probably can't sleep tonight. Thanks in advance.

yep its true but im taking off my cai during the winter months and will put it back on in the spring and i may try to find a way to make the filter fit without it hitting the foglight. the aem kit doesn't dent but it also has a smaller filter as i had the aem first and now trd. performance wise they are both good the trd has less bends and is the only one that fits the s/c without mods

that was me on matrixowners.com........it will be dented, nothing you can do about it, however it will not affect performance.

When you say "it will be dented", does it mean when installation takes place, the installer will have to dented it purposely to make it fit or when the filter is fitted into the foglight area, it will cause a dent on the filter by the foglight? Please confirm with me. Thanks.

it will cause a dent when you install it.......it's packed so tight in there you can't avoid it...............but don't worry about it.

So when I bring it to the installer, should I let him know that the filter has to be dented to allow fitment behind the foglights? Or should the installer figure out that must be done so? Thanks. Rolla s

where are you getting it installed? you don't have to tell them to dent it, just tell them to install it, and that you are aware it will be quite tight against the foglight. when you shove it on the intake tube it'll put a dent into it. If you're having toyota install it don't worry they'll have no problems........

If not i recommend you just install it yourself, it's a pretty simple task.

I have completely no idea about engine stuff....but I'm planning to have my neigbour, he's a mechanic, to install it for me. How long will the installation take? Is it worth it to have it installed by a professional at the bodyshop. Thanks for the info RollaS.

But is it potentially easy to screw up the MAF and VSV hoses......i don't want an engine check light though......but I guess my neighbour mechanic can do me a favor since it is an wasy job. Thanks for all the infor guyz. Appreciate your quick replies.

1.even a dealer should do the install for less than $75

    2. the install can be done with out denting, by pushing the filter back, pulling the light out, installing the CAI and then pulling the filter out again, then put the fog light back...another method is to slice off 1 inch at the end...I did my filter install from the bottom as well, the car was on a lift...

    3. as for off in the winter on in the summer thing, I was told the vaccume line would prevent hydrolock as it would only let the water ger so high...I thought about putting a one way valve on it, like differencial breather on a 4x4s diff....
also I live in So Cal so water that high is once a year and once in a blue moon so...

If the CAI behind the fog lights is a tight fit for the TRD intake system, do you think a smaller filter will be a much better fit?

never thought about that...but it doesnt matter if its a tight fit..it doesnt affect the perforamcne of the intake..adn the trd filter is so big......bigger the better

That's also a good thing how the TRD intake goes all the way to the back of the fog lights. If you remove the lights, you got a ram air in the making.

    Injen doesn't dent

Maybe go with the Injen intake over the TRD. It is cheaper for one ( $198 at pTuning.com with the discount), it didn't dent, and I was very happy with the performance.

quick off topic maybe......... does the cai or ram increase the consumption of gas?

i guess so because more air means more gas.

I spoke with K&N and they said that all the Corolla needs is a short ram intake-- because they can't find any added benefit it bringing it down that low. Someone explain to me why they say that? K&N techs know best I guess. Then AEM say that short ram is better too for the Corolla, but they do have the option for a CAI. Hmmmmmmm.

Short ram delivers low end torque anyways so that is good. The stock air inlet pipe is still there which can provide some cooler outside air so the short ram can pick it up. Plus, you don't have to worry all the time with weather changes. Shorter pipe means the engine gets more air faster than a CAI so I guess that is good too. Plus you got all that air coming in through the front grill and some of it sweeps over the engine compartment so you are getting some cooler air there. I think everything evens out at the end regardless if you have CAI or short ram intake.

    go with the CAI

The CAI for me gave me a noticeable difference in the low end and the high end. I didn't really notice this until I took my CAI off. Without the additional air flow, the engine seemed to struggle versus having the CAI. As far as gas mileage, I am currently getting 31 mpg driving to and from work. This is with hard starts, running 80-85 mph on the freeway, and sitting in traffic for an hour each day on the way home. The gains outweigh the gas loss. Plus it sounds great!

Is the air filter in contact with the foglight?

Does the filter rub against the back of the foglight after the install, or is it just nessesary to dent the filter to get it in?

Re: Is the air filter in contact with the foglight?

When the tech installed mine, he shifted the filter a bit higher up the tubing. Now, the filter sits on top of foglight.
