    transmission noise

Wondering if anybody else has encountered this problem.

My engine sounds almost like it's a diesel but I've found that the sound is coming from my transmission area. it's a clicking/ticking sound dependent on vehicle speed (not rpm). One person suggested my CV joint could be failing.. has anybody else had this problem before? Coming up on 70K miles.

CV Joint and RPMS? I dont see the correlation.

CV Joints failing would be a clicking when turning in the opposite direction

Call up the Click and Clack brothers at Car Talk.. They will give you an answer. I would love to hear one of us call them.. unfortunately I am working during the time they are doing their show.

I lifted the car up and tried yanking on the wheel to see if the bearing is bad.. no play at all.

mine turned out to be the CV joints and wheel bearings on both sides and it didn't make a click and clack sound . it was more like a thump. my 98 LE did this and my 01 S is doing it so right now its sitting at the dealership.

apparently my problem wasn't with the wheel bearing. Instead I have a faulty transmission and the recommended fix is a new one. So, being an 02 I got one of the 02-03 faulty bearing transmissions that 9th gen owners have been plagued by. the bearings in the transmission are failing so I'll have to remove it from the car, fully disassemble, and replace all the bearings. ie.. transmission rebuild. most threads I found on 9th gen owners simply replaced the transmission, but I can't afford another so I'll have to replace the broken parts in mine. This is a somewhat rare issue (only affects cars built in mid to late 2002). But the 03 corollas this is a somewhat frequent issue. Roughly 1% are running in to it from the number of complaints I'm seeing.

On top of that.. I just replaced the fluid with full synthetic to try to make it last longer before seizing up. In the process I found that the tranny was 1/2 quart low from the factory. So it has been going 71K miles with a 1/2 quart low of fluid. The old fluid looked like mud, and beforehand I had trouble shifting in to first. After.. shifting feels like when the car was new again, absolutely huge improvement, but it's too late for my bearings, the gears however should be fine.
