    Transmission/differential/axel woes?

I have a baffling issue with a 95 Corolla DX that I need some help on. About a year ago the CV joint on the drivers side went and I had it replaced with a remanufactured half-shaft. This solved the problem for a week or so, but soon the clunking sounds were back again. I took it back to the shop and they claimed that my differential was loose and I needed to rebuild or replace my transmission. I put in a junk-yard tranny with 50,000 miles on it but it still didn't solve the problem. They refunded my money for the remanufactured half-shaft and I took it to the Toyota dealership. After they inserted a Toyota axel the car worked fine for about 1 year (or 7,000 miles) Now the clunking is back! I put the car up on a lift and the driver's side half-shaft is very loose. The car has 170,000+ miles on it and I don't want to put another $1,000 into it.

Has anyone had similar trouble or found a fix for this?

Loose how? The CV joint is loose / inner or outer? Check the axle nut torque. If it's over or under tightened, it will cause your wheel bearing to fail which will definitely cause lots of clunking noises. Also check the procedure for tightening. I think you tighten to specified torque, then untighten 90º, then re-tighten - something like that. The inner joint is usually a little bit loose - you can move it in and out a little bit - maybe 1/8-1/4". It's just held in by a snap ring.

The inner joint, the part that is inserted into the transmission is really loose. Practically flopping around (up, down and around, not just in and out) . Will a bearing adjustment help that?
