    Transmission/differential/axel woes?

I have a baffling issue with a 95 Corolla DX that I need some help on. About a year ago the CV joint on the drivers side went and I had it replaced with a remanufactured half-shaft. This solved the problem for a week or so, but soon the clunking sounds were back again. I took it back to the shop and they claimed that my differential was loose and I needed to rebuild or replace my transmission. I put in a junk-yard tranny with 50,000 miles on it but it still didn't solve the problem. They refunded my money for the remanufactured half-shaft and I took it to the Toyota dealership. After they inserted a Toyota axel the car worked fine for about 1 year (or 7,000 miles) Now the clunking is back! I put the car up on a lift and the driver's side half-shaft is very loose. The car has 170,000+ miles on it and I don't want to put another $1,000 into it.

Has anyone had similar trouble or found a fix for this?

Did you try the bearings? Mine was doing the same thing, replaced the shaft, boots, etc... still did it.. .Then I replaced the main hub bearing and it was gone... been gone for three years now..

that's what i would think it is - get the bearings checked... though you would think these professional shops would've thought to check that? esp on a 170k mile car??!?

The bearings are mentioned every in every post, but it was never mentioned at the garage. I'll check them out tomorrow and post my results. Thanks for the help.
