Great. I am on my way to a wedding and my tranny died. Sigh.

To buy a new (used) car or a new transmission OR upgrade to a manual tranny?

x2, time for a better car IMO. Is it worth spending that money on such an old car?

I might find an entire car (for parts of course) for that much.

If you love the car, time to upgrade... if you're done with it... replace it. Just my feelings.

i wish i was close to y'all... i'd like to do all the work myself but its kinda depressing to do things alone lol...

Will any 4a transmission fit my 4ac engine? or do i have to limit myself to looking for another 4ac transmission?

Does Dr. Tweek still do wiring jobs?

Im looking at finding an engine+tranny and just dumping it in.

Other than ECU wiring, I'll also need new fuel pump since my car is carb'd right?

    What else am I missing?

I haven't heard from Tweak in ages... If you can find a donor car, then you're in good shape, otherwise we'd have to hunt down parts.... not the end of the world but it just takes longer. ;)

Off the top of my head though, transmission, associated mounts, ECU, wiring if it doesn't interchange out (like the 98+ Rolla's did) and that's about it...

I'll be doing the same thing too. I've been reading up on how to do thins and what I will need. This website is quite helpful for auto to manual tranny swaps.

Yah. I decided to sell the rolla for cheap... 500$ - reasonable IMO since it has lots of life left. But people wont budge.

    New discoveries:
Just because I had a 1/2 bottle of ATF, I put it in. Let it idle until temp gauge rose. Put in D and revved a little, a little more, and maybe til 2k rpm and the car moves... It feels like the car's dragging a tank or something... There seems to be friction somewhere...

It's definitely possible that I burned the tranny... Although before leaving for the wedding that Saturday, I checked the tranny dipstick and it had some oil. Granting the dip stick is not really accurate because it does not go in all the way - that shouldnt have been a problem, I think.

Any more diagnosis other than "the tranny's broke"?

I may just keep the car until I can find a garage to tear it up myself. As of now, I dont have anywhere to park and tear it apart... I looked at the DIY manual and removing the tranny seems doable at my novice level...

Have you tried doing a trans filter kit?? They are cheap and get out most of the old fluid. Easy to do too and I bet its never been done on your car.

The interesting thing with auto-transmissions.... there are so many moving parts it's hard to make a diagnostic without tearing it down. Among the possible issues with an auto trans are the following:

Clogged Pump/Filter, Bad torque converter, Fused clutch plates, Worn Bands.... the list goes on... more than likely if it's just fighting to move it could be a smaller issue, like a clogged filter, worn bands, etc... the TC could be bad too but at least that's not a major cost... Again, the only way to know what's up is to tear it down and look it over but those things can get pretty complicated... I can rebuild a TH400 or a 700R4 out of a Chevy with my eyes closed but the newer auto transmissions are a little more complicated... same basic principal but a lot more parts now. It's definitely be worth the swap to a 5spd if the option is available to you.

Thanks for hat reply vortex. I'm thinking about letting the local high school auto tech class work on it. No one is going to buy this anyway...
