It's a similar to a strut/shock used in the suspension, but it's for the engine. It dampens (reduces vibration) that "bounce" you get from the engine producing more torque than can be transfered through the transmission to the wheels (or if you're lucky to have enough torque, it dampens and reduces wheel hop). One end of the torque damper is attached to the engine and the other to some part of the car's frame.

It just prevents the engine from moving too much on its "soft" mounts.

    I thought of something else...

Some people, basically in racing applications, just attach a solid metal bracket instead of a damper like this. While this does keep the the engine from "bouncing" around on its mounts while effectively delivering the power to the wheels, it also has its drawbacks. Now, instead of just the motor mounts absorbing the engine vibrations the entire car is...which means...things will loosen, things will break.

The damper will slow down sudden movements from quick accelerations and engine braking while also letting the engine vibrate.

The dampers alone are universal, it's the mounting brackets that have to be made specifically for the car and engine. That said, and you've heard it before..."I don't think anyone has made it for the corolla".

From the pictures, it seems as though the engine side of the damper brackets bolt up to the engine side of the motor mounts.

Check out the pictures on this website.http://www.silkroad-usa.com/pages/etd.htm

those damper do work. When i drove another rolla at the track a guy had this on it and it was notably less vibration overall. alot less wheel hop. tho the only thing is that they are very expensive. This is another reason why i mounted the engine directly. the motor mounts broke front and back. only

Fucking spending all that money :) Just goto Shucks and pick up a gabrial shock for a Geo Metro or something and install that badboy on the bottom side of the engine connected to the firewall :)

I can't weld the engine to the frame because I think the vibrations will crash my hard drive in my CarPC which would suck.

I have never had my engine shake at all , only when it needs an oil change it will start to shake thats is but even then, like i said i only recommend this if you race quite a bit but its not the best for everyday driving because you can feel the shifting and everything when you give it gas. but in idle and continous driving its okay. only when flooring it or having the passing gear engaging at low speeds it throws you back.

What I really want to do is just stop my car from bucking :) In 1st and 2nd gear when I push the gas a little and take my foot off the car starts to do this surge thing that sucks.

then you may be letting out the clutch too early with not enough gas.

tyr to loosen up the throttle cable a little bit it may too tight and too sensitive.

I'm not letting the clutch out at all to get it to buck. This is when I'm just driving like 10 - 15 mph down the road around 2 - 3k rpm and the car will hit a little bump or somethign and then start bucking a little bit like it can't get the throttle smooth again.

What if that lil bump made you accidently press the gas a little further thus the engine bucking?

have you fuel delivery checked, and check for misfire.also the clutch resivoir fluid level.is ther maybe the slighest chance your clutch may be going out.

have your suspension checked to see if you have any loose bolts/parts or possibly broken.

That 'bucking' is normal, is it not? It can happen on my car also..haven't checked to see if the MR2 does it or not, though.

that bucking thing you're talking about is because the lower gears resistance (stopping power) is higher than 3rd and up, so when you let off the gas you're essentially engine braking. also since these gears are better for acceleration, if you're not 100% smooth while letting off the gas and getting back on it in 1st and second, you're just going from slowing down to decent acceleration in a very short period of time. this change in acceleration is called "jerk" and this bucking thing is a good example for why it's called that.

generally if you're going to let off the gas in first or second without shifting, i would at least press the clutch also. basically, be as smooth as you can, and your car will follow suit.

ps that bucking thing sucks, it hella makes me look like a noob at stick, but sometimes i can't help it cuz my clutch is on its last leg...

I haven't driven stick in ages... I'd probably crash while jugling the cluth brake and gas while finding the gears (3+ year ago, out of my 1ish year with license heh)

Actually I'm going to do a little DIY and build a Torque Strap for my motor and let you guys know how it turns out.
