to any mechanics.... exhaust help on a 98 corolla

I have a couple questions on exhaust help on a 98 corolla with the header. On the end of the header there are a couple bolts and springs on these bolts. Do these springs have a lot of tension on them do I need to compress them? Also is there a specific amount of torque I need to apply to these bolts? Thanks.

You should be able to find this information in a Haynes manual, I don't know it off hand though!

Just take them off/torque them down like you would normal bolts. When you tighten them they will bottom out just like any other bolt.

No need to compress them ... I think they are just there to add the pressure once you bolt the nuts down.

yeah the springs just help ket the 2 flanges together....you should see my bolts I have in there now...the are the size of alt bolt..in fact they probably are alternator bolts. Long story short.....the original threads on the SF d/p weren't strong enough and the spring made the bolt rip the bot righ tout of the threads.....so I had to rethread the hole and use bigger bolts.

I was just wondering last night why in the hell they would use springs. I mean would it even hurt to not even put the springs back and just put a small pipe in place. The dealership said I should really have them do it but that figures right.

the springs allow the bottom of the downpipe pivot and move when the top of the manifold moves with the engine.
