    Lewiston police are investigating as a possible hate crime an incident in which a ham steak was placed in a bag where a group of Somali students were sitting.

    Such an incident would be offensive to Somalis, who are Muslims and consider pork unclean.

    A Lewiston Middle School student was suspended after the incident, which happened April 11th.

    Superintendent Leon Levesque says the incident's being treated seriously and police are investigating.

    The incident recalled one last summer in which a man rolled a pig's head into a mosque in Lewiston, which has a large Somali population. The courts later ordered the man to stay away from the mosque.

    I don't know if that's considered a hate crime. Its more like teasing them.

    what if I worship ham and happened to be sitting in the same public lunch room. I mean geez, they're going to have to haul me off and throw me in jail for pushing my religion on to unsuspecting swine haters. Course next time I find them praying to the east and say something about it I'll get tossed in jail again where I can enjoy my ham with a side of rye and satellite TV.:rolleyes:

    Some groups take things too far when it comes to racism. I don't consider it a hate crime unless there is some kind of physical harm. A slice of ham is not going to kill anyone(unless you get worms from it or something). Some people just need to chill and give warnings and demand apologies instead of jumping to conclusions that its a hate crime. The bottomline: its a racist act, not a hate crime.

    this isnt a case of racism... they are accusing a child of being a biggot and commiting a hate crime against anothers religion. race has absolutely nothing to do with ones choice to worship an entity.
