thinking of installing new camshafts (98 corolla)

I am thinking of installing new camshafts in my 98 corolla. I am taking internal combustion engine classes and get the basic idea of how its done. The thing im wondering though is it possible to to remove the camshafts from the cam gears without having to remove the chain and gears and then tighten the gears back up to the new cams? That way I wouldnt have to mess around with all of the timing adjustments. Also, I am aware that I would have to replace the camshaft bearing caps, but do I HAVE to replace the lifters too? Do they get ground down from the cam lobes? Just curious.

    1) it's possible to remove the shafts from the gears, however it'd be a bitch
    2) don't worry about the timing, even if the chain slumps, the alignment on the bottom (crank) won't move (trust me I know this by experience). Then once you're all done, loosen the tensioner and line your marks back up (dots on cam gears, yellow painted chain link) on the cams, re-apply the tensioner and you're done.
