    Tensioner Replacement

I recently took my 02 corolla to get an oil change from toyota. They noted that my tensioner was leaking grease and needed to be replaced. I was wondering how difficult this would be as a diy. I found a really great diy for a VW vr6 which makes me think i can pull it off. Any info/ pics pointing me in the right direction are appreciated.

    Thanks

I think he's talking about the tensioner pulley for the engine belt.

    Bustin' out the Haynes manual...

    1. Remove the drivebelt.
-Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise to release the tension (to release the tension on the drivebelt, place a long wrench or socket and ratchet on the hex-shaped boss[the bolt, not the nut], then turn clockwise), then slip the belt off the pulleys. Slowly release the tensioner.

    2. Remove/Install tensioner
-Unscrew the mounting bolt and nut
-Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the fasteners to the torque values (nut = 21 ft/lbs)(bolt = 51 ft/lbs)

    3. Re-install drivebelt
-Route belt over the pulleys, again rotating the tensioner to allow the belt to be installed, then release the belt tensioner.

Don't forget how the belt is routed around all the pulleys

Here's the order (following clockwise, as if you were looking straight at the side of the engine:(
    1. alternator (follows to the right)
    2. water pump (follows to the left)
    3. AC compressor (right and then under)
    4. crankshaft pulley (left and back up)
    5. tensioner pulley (right all the way around)
    6. power steering pump (left and then over)....and then back to the alternator

they have and internal bearing system that cracks over time and leaks the grease.
