I know how you feel. my old pc used pc100, I just upgraded to a new machine.

ofcourse, ddr will fade away in new pc's soon enough. the new amd socket will retire ddr; intel already has --> DDR2

price jumped up to blah again.. so ends that deal

it could just be that your computer doesn't need 512. you'll only see a benefit if you regulary are filling up the 256MB you had. Most older pc's that use PC100/PC133 are running software that doesn't demand so much. On my old pc I had 128MB to start and it was horrible performance, so I upgraded to 256 of pc100, didn't ever need any more.

I need a gig now because I'm running a lot of new software that just eats memory like there's no tomorrow (photo editing, video editing, latest games)

The more memory you have beyond what would be considered average for your pc the less benefit it has.

    ie.
You have a celeron 800mhz desktop
@ 64MB .. it's dying, constantly writing to the swap file
    @ 128MB.. like a 20% system performance increase
    @ 256MB .. like 8% increase
    @ 512MB .. ~ 2-3% increase
    @ 1Gig ~ 0-0.5% increase

this is all assuming you aren't running a bunch of newer software

at work, we had an old G4 tower that was dead, so we stripped the usable parts from it(hard drive), and let people have whatever else they wanted. i got the processor from it(faster than my current G4) and all the RAM.
