I meant it would void the warranty on his super charger. <br />
    I definately agree with that.

    Super Charger &amp; CAI

Quick Question for the experts on here. A friend of mine told me that if I purchased a Super Charger I would have to get rid of my CAI.

    Is that true?

    If so, Why??

I think you can use it, but it'll void your warranty. I was reading over the installation directions and it said that if you used an aftermarket intake it would void ytour warranty. But I know I've seen it done.

there's no point in a CAI with a supercharger...

think about it.. the air gets heated by the SC anyway, why waste $$ on "cold air" ?

I heard that with an aftermarket intake, your CAT will get fried if you use the S/C w/ TRD ecu. Maybe that's why?

he said he already had one...which means he probably doesn't have the stock aorbox anymore (if he's like me and throws his stock parts away...lol)

so? if he threw away his stock parts, he shouldn't be worried about voiding warranty at this point, because he already DID that.

just put in a higher-flow panel filter in your stock airbox.. you'll get the same, if not BETTER results than a CAI ..

Stick with the stock airbox and put in a drop in filter. You can remove the resonator box(es) though. Should give you the sound of a tube intake and maybe slightly more power.

I didn't have a resonator box when I took out my stock air intake. So I don't think the new corollas come with them...unless mine was just wierd or something.

Usually where the CAI sucks from is where the resonator box is. It was a bitch to remove on my 98.

Right...Mine had none....There was just that tube that went from the airbox out to the atmosphere....no resonator box in between. So...like I said, either the 03+'s don't have them..or my car was like a factory defect. Which wouldn't suprise me because my vacuum line were all screwed up when I bought it.

I would have to disagree, being as how I have had the stock box and now the CAI on my rolla. Yes the air is heated up, but the air flow is smoother into the engine. I'm still running rich though even with the CAI, but that doesn't mean each car is tuned the same...

If you are worried about the warranty, just take it off whenever you take it in for service...

Wow I am sorry you have been getting bad information on here. The only correct thing listed was that by putting the CAI on it can burn out your cat. The reason for that is TRD made the Air/Fuel ratio very rich and the CAI leans it out which leads to burning the cat out. I never had this problem though. I would recommend a CAI to anyone with 92 or higher octane gas because I gained about 13 hp to the crank on the dyno. And that was a gain of 13 hp over the stock airbox with a k&n filter. And TRD is the only CAI that will fit without modification. :)

The smoothness of the airflow shouldn't matter anyway....the air gets compressed in the supercharger. Atleast, that's what I would think.

Would an Apexi SAFC fix or at least help with this problem?

Here is the TRD Supercharger Manual for the corolla.....

Caution: Do not use any aftermarket "Cold Air Intake" kits with the TRD Supercharger. The OE Air Filter Housing and the OE Mass Air Flow sensor are critical for the correct Air/Fuel ratio calibration with the TRD Supercharger. The use of any aftermarket "Cold Air Intake" kits will void the TRD Supercharger warranty and also the powertrain warranty.

my AEM fit just fine without modification, though I have heard many times that it's a bad idea to use a CAI with the TRD S/C.

That excerpt from the manual keeps referring to "cold air intake" kits - wonder if the same applies for short ram intake kits? I just hate the way the stock airbox looks on the 03+'s.

And whoever else posted it - your car isn't defective for not having a resonator box, mine didn't either, though my 99 did. The 03+'s don't have them - the air intake tubing just comes out the bottom of the filter box and underneath the battery then up behind the headlight.

Wait LowROlla you have a SC'er with the AEM CAI.... because I have an AEM CAI sitting at my house because it wouldnt fit so I bought the TRD CAI. When I got my engine replaced under warranty I just took of the CAI... its that simple. And yea you may burn the cat out quicker but I would say its worth it for more power. If you burn the cat out just buy the JP Mid pipe for 550 and then you have 1 high flow cat rather than two restrictive cats :). And yes any air/fuel controller will work and make it safe to use the CAI if you are on 91 octane gas. Wouldn't hurt to get a water injection system either. THE CAI GAINS 10 WHP PUT IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! We all want more power right.

this is definitely a tough forum. not much love or support here. probably why there is not large gatherings like mo.com.

13hp at the crank will equal at least 10whp. in a car that weights 2500-2700 lbs it matters. frankly if I cared about my CAT I wouldn't have done any modifications, however my original CAT and exhaust are sitting in storage while I enjoy the most out of my car with my current system.

For all of those who have experienced a ride in the modified corollas, you know the difference each hp and tq pound added does, and eventually it adds up.

don't hate because you don't have the cash, time, or balls to modifiy your car. we are just providing our experiences.

in the meantime I'm gonna enjoy my car and mod the hell out of it.

next mods and dynos to come in about 6 months. at that time I expect to be hitting near 200hp to the wheels.

who gives a flying fuck about your 13 hp to the crank..it's all about power to the wheels..and did you get your car dynoed after you installed the CAI? if not..how do you know you gained 13 hp..

it does matter as well as the lower temperature of the air and where it is pulling it from. thin of it in terms of a freeway. traffic flows smoother when it is straight and wide. the less lanes and more turns and bumps, the slower traffic becomes. a short ram will pull hotter air as a result of its location in the engine bay on the 03 and up. the CAI will pull the air near the ground away from the hot engine.

as far as the TRD manual...if I was really concerned I would not have changed my exahust header and back. although I have had warranty work done and i just put the OEM parts back on and no questions asked at toyota. keep the oem parts though. to throw them away is suicide. at this point to control the a/f ratio, i am looking at a a/f controller and eventually the water injection to cool the charge. in the meantime I'm still running rich, but the power is very much there...check my dyno WHP and WTQ....

Hey no need to be rude. Black03corolla is pretty knowledgeable on this subject. He was extremely helpful to everyone over at 2k3.org and mo.com about s/c, water/alch injection, etc.
He's just helpin out with info that he DOES no about.

How does 13 hp to the crank not matter. Would you rather have bought your car stock with 130 hp or 143 i think everyone would choose i 143. % of loss will stay the same with basically any power modification. So by increasing the hp to the crank means you increase the whp subtracted by your % of loss. And yes I have had my car on the dyno between each modification so I know exactly what made the power. And when I had the car tuned with and without the CAI on the same day there was a 13 hp gain with it on. Who would deny themselves of that extra power to potentially burn out a cat you should replace anyways?

    hmm.

well, the smell from a dead/burning cat is pretty repulsive...not to mention the cost to replace the cat. every time you kill it.

sorry...i'd just deal with the current torque.

then again, my corolla's not getting anything more performancewise for quite some time...i bought a car with over 150HP and over 200lbs/ft torque

I can't believe you just explained to me how a CAI works................yes that's true for N/A engines........but with turbos/sc the air has to go through a compressor.....when it does that it will lose that "smooth flowing" air flow when the air gets compressed. At least this is true for turbos..I don't see how it would be any different on a sc.

Why are you arguing if the CAI will make power both myself and Rolla_Dink and Larry from Mo's have dynos to prove the 10 whp gain from a CAI. There is no question about that. YOu will make power if you add the CAI to the TRD Supercharger.

A drop-in filter... hells no I didnt waste money on that cr@p. I have my intake because im running a water injection system and it needs to tap into the intake. You cant do it with the plastic air box. So if the air temp make no difference then I guess I bought my injection system for no reason at all, the power gain is in my head, and my car is knock free on a coincidence?

Your responses make no sense... its like me telling you to run your stock air box with your turbo. I know where your coming from, but it helps out weather you want to believe it or not.

Well then that would make sense....I didn't think about that.

That's different......A CAI by itself does not cool the air that much.

If it was possible then I would agree with that statement.

I just thought it was funny he tried to explain the concept of a CAI to me. So you got it dyno'd with the stock filter...a CAI...and a high flow drop in filter.....ALL after the supercharger?

I think you're making more horsepower because you're drawing in more air...but not because of smoother airflow form the CAI. I think you'd get the same performance out of a good drop in filter. The only thing a CAI is good for with a S/C is looks IMO.

There is definately a boost in horsepower with an aftermarket intake over the stock filter box. Only good for looks? Wow... thats a first.
