Subaru considering offering non-boxer, non-AWD models

Filed under: Coupes, Economy, Green, Crossovers/CUVs, Hatchbacks, Subaru, Toyota
[IMG]Subarus have sported standard AWD since the 80s, well before most other automakers even bothered with the technology. That, partnered with its boxer engine, goes together like peanut butter and jelly. But the Japanese automaker has to begin worrying about fuel efficiency and emissions, so the two features that have defined the brand for decades may become optional on future models. Thankfully, it's got Toyota to pilfer from, so the implementation of new drivetrains will be a bit easier if and when it makes the shift. Subaru of Australia Director Nick Senior broke the news of the possible switch, but he also emphasized that any changes wouldn't be made before 2010 and that no product plans are without AWD or the boxer engine in the foreseeable future.

nothing like a little toyota to water down a half decent car company. so much for the awd turbocharged toyotas idea.

subaru gets a good gas mileage with awd, so i don't see a point to worry about switching. it will make subaru just another car.

I remember Subaru models in the 90s that were 2wd, the Legacy specifically. It'd be a mistake in my mind to go back to that, since none of their current models seem well suited to a 2wd configuration.

well it i see good and bad in this. one it migh be cheaper to get a new subaru now. however i feel they well loose HP and plus i love the sound of that boxter engine. lets just hope they keep most of their cars turboed if they do switch over to another motor scheme.

Not to mention if they go 2WD they'll be less able to do this(lilbit01, this looks like one of your car's long lost siblings, lol:(

A 2wd Subaru will be just like any other car IMO.

Hence why the XRS is merely a commuter. The money is in a proven-performer platform that's 24 years old, lol.

I think Toyota has made it fairly clear that if you want even a tinge of excitement from a new TMC vehicle, you have to buy a Lexus. Even then, you've only really got 3 choices...all of which are IS models.

Hopefully Subaru won't go down that same path for the sake of gigantor sales numbers....it's already started with the new WRX.

because i've been here for years...since 2003. why should i leave just because i sold the cars?

Subaru will only go down that path if Toyota tells them to do so.

my money, at this point, is on Nissan taking over the "fun" market. everyone else is watering down their products.

It's such a pity. I used to think that Toyota outselling GM in the US and becoming more powerful would be a good thing. Now I'm regretting it. It's becoming too influential. It's on a path to becoming a monopoly.

i dont care if you sold your toyota cars. its pointless to stay in a toyota forum only to talk bad about it ... or do you not get what i am trying to say?

its like if i sold my subaru but i stay on the subaru forum and i just diss subaru cars when i feel like it. its like, why do you stay on the forums if you dont even like subaru? why do you stay here if you dont even like toyota anymore?

I also agree that the new stuff is extremely bland.. the bot posted another article about how hyundai is now a threat to toyota. That's pretty sad really because toyota has done such a poor job of marketing and has no desirable products newer than 01. :(
