    Starter or battery?

my car wont start in the morning... it takes me more than 5 tries until it starts... all i hear is a clicking sound... the engine wont turn... but once the engine is hot, i shut the engine off and start it again, it starts normally... dead battery or worn out starter? btw, it a 99 corolla CE...

it's most likely the battery. how long has it been? mine did that a while back. if it does it again after you switched the batter your alternator could be bad.

Before you switch out the battery, check your alternator.

If it really is your alternator, and you put in a new battery, your new battery can go bad as well.

Did you add anything to the car that may have cause a electrical problem (alarm system, amplifier, new headunit, etc.) - sounds like you have a short somewhere that is draining your battery or a bad charging system. To be on the safe side, like e_andree suggested - make sure you get your ignition system checked out. If the system is bad - your brand new battery will start doing the same thing.

    Good Luck.

its not the starter since the clicking means it is working... its prolly like everyone says, battery or alternator, but i doubt the alternator. It shouldn't go bad so soon but check it to be on the safe side. Also check the vacuum lines, the 1zz doesn't have very many so it should be a fast check. Look at a sticker stuck to the underside of the hood under the insulation, there should be a diagram for the lines. Also check for any frayed wiring in the engine bay or any melted or exposed wires. If all else fails bring it to the dealer or a trusted mechanic.

tow truck it to autozone and have your starter/alternator checked.
